Christopher Bigsby
Christopher William Edgar Bigsby FRSA FRSL, (born 27 June 1941) is a British literary analyst and novelist, with more than sixty books to his credit. Earlier in his writing career, his books were published under the name C. W. E. Bigsby. He has won awards for his work on the American theatre, for his biography of Arthur Miller, for his first novel, ''Hester'', and for his work in study abroad. He holds honorary degrees from Bolton University and the Complutense University of Madrid. Bigsby was educated at Sutton County Grammar School and thence at the University of Sheffield, for his BA (1959–1962) and MA (1962–64), before moving to the University of Nottingham for his PhD (1964–66). His first appointment as an American Literature lecturer was at the Aberystwyth University, University of Wales, Aberystwyth. John Jeremiah Bigsby
John Jeremiah Bigsby (14 August 1792 – 10 February 1881), was an English physician who became known for his work on geology, an interest developed while on military service in Lower and Upper Canada, 1818-1826. He was a member of the American Philosophical Society (elected in 1825). Before moving to London, he was Alderman and Mayor of Newark-upon-Trent, 1827–1830. In 1850, he published a lively book recounting his life and travels in British North America, ''The Shoe and Canoe''. In 1868, he published his most important scientific work, ''Thesaurus Siluricus'', being a list of all the fossils which occur in the Silurian formation across the world. He contributed about twenty seven papers to various scientific societies in London. He published ''Thesaurus Devonico-Carboniferus'' but died shortly before completing ''Thesaurus Permianus''. Paul Bigsby
Paul Adelburt Bigsby (1899–1968) was an American inventor, designer, and pioneer of the solid body electric guitar. Bigsby is best known for designing the Bigsby vibrato tailpiece (also mislabeled as a tremolo arm) and proprietor of Bigsby Electric Guitars. Paul built an early steel guitar for Southern California steel guitarist Earl "Joaquin" Murphy of Spade Cooley's band, as well as Jack Rivers, and then built a solid body electric guitar conceptualized by Merle Travis which would possess comparable level of sustain as a steel guitar. This was achieved by anchoring the strings through the body instead of a tailpiece. Completed in 1948, the instrument would gain great popularity and further influence the design of the solid body Telecaster later produced by Leo Fender, as well as Les Paul solid body. Bigsby Electric Guitars
Bigsby is a brand of guitars and guitar accessories that operated as an independent company by Paul Bigsby until 1966 when it was purchased by ex- Gibson executive Ted McCarty. In 1999, the brand was acquired by Gretsch from McCarty, which owned it until 2019, when Bigsby was sold to Fender Musical Instruments Corporation. An early innovator of solid body electric guitars and accessories, the company was the first to introduce a guitar headstock that had all of its tuning pegs on the same side. This design was later adopted by manufacturers such as Fender for their Telecaster and Stratocaster models. Most well known, however, was the development of the Bigsby vibrato tailpiece, a wildly popular vibrato arm for guitars that was installed on their own models, as well as numerous other companies such as Gretsch, Gibson, Ibanez and many others. Bigsby Vibrato Tailpiece
The Bigsby vibrato tailpiece (or Bigsby for short) is a type of vibrato systems for guitar, mechanical vibrato device for electric guitar designed by Paul Bigsby and produced by the Bigsby Electric Guitar Company (currently an independently operated subsidiary of Fender Musical Instruments Corporation). The device allows musicians to bend the pitch of notes or entire chords with their pick hand for various effects. Bigsby was inspired to create a new vibrato system after being tasked by Merle Travis to repair the Kauffman Vibrola on his Gibson L-10. The Bigsby system would debut in 1951, with the first example going to Travis. By the mid-1950s, Bigsby had ceased production of his own guitars and began only producing a range of vibrato tailpieces. Robert Bigsby
Robert Bigsby (11 April 1806 – 27 September 1873) was an English antiquarian and author. Bigsby was born in Castle Gate, Nottingham in 1806, son of Robert Bigsby, the registrar of the archdeaconry of Nottingham. His father had visited the United States in 1787 where he had often been the guest of George Washington. He was educated at Repton School during the headmastership of William Boultbee Sleath, and originally intended to become a lawyer. However, he turned to the study of antiquities and in particular to collecting memorabilia of Sir Francis Drake, the famous navigator of the Elizabethan era. He had inherited Drake's astrolabe, and in 1831 he presented the instrument to King William IV, who in turn presented it to Greenwich Hospital. He presented other relics of Drake to the British Museum. Cartavious "Tank" Bigsby (born August 30, 2001) is an American professional football running back for the Jacksonville Jaguars of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Auburn Tigers and was selected by the Jaguars in the third round of the 2023 NFL draft. Early life Bigsby attended Callaway High School in Hogansville, Georgia. As a senior he rushed for 1,636 yards with 27 touchdowns and as a junior had 2,221 yards and 22 touchdowns. He committed to Auburn University to play college football. A four star prospect, he was ranked as the 7th overall recruit in the state of Georgia by 247 Sports. College career Bigsby took over as Auburn's starting running back his freshman year in 2020. Gene Silverberg, who both got their start as children working on Maxwell Street.
