Bigelow Rosenwald School
The Bigelow Rosenwald School, also known as Rosenwald Community Center, is a former Rosenwald School located in Toad Suck, about northeast of Bigelow, Perry County, Arkansas. Built in 1926, it is a single-story wood-frame building with vernacular Craftsman elements. It served as a school until 1964, when it became a community center. It is the only Rosenwald School building that still stands in Perry County. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. Arkansas Highway 60 (AR 60, Ark. 60, Hwy. 60) is a state highway that exists in five separate sections in Arkansas. The longest and most well-known segment of runs from Highway 28 in Plainview east to U.S. Route 65B (US 65B) in Conway. A segment in western Logan County of begins at the Old Highway 10 at the Sebastian County line and runs east to Highway 10. Toad Suck, Arkansas
Toad Suck is an unincorporated community in Perry County, Arkansas, United States. It is the location of (or is the nearest community to) Bigelow Rosenwald School, which is located at the junction of Arkansas Highway 60 and Bethel AME Road and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The origin of the name Toad Suck is disputed. Some believe that it received the name when idle rivermen would congregate at the local tavern where they would "suck on the bottle 'til they swell up like toads", while others believe it is a corruption of a French phrase meaning "a narrow channel in the river." Toad Suck has frequently been noted on lists of unusual place names. The community lent its name to the Toad Suck Ferry Lock and Dam on the Arkansas River.
