Big Nine Conference (Michigan)
The Big Nine Conference, formerly the Big Eight Conference, was a high school sports conference in Genesee County, Michigan, that ended with four high schools in 2012. History Formed in 1960 as the Big Eight Conference, the conference became the Big Nine Conference in 1962 with the addition of Mt. Morris High School. Ainsworth High School left in 1968, and Mt. Morris left in 1972. Powers Catholic High School joined in 1974. In 1976, Carman High School and Swartz Creek High School were added from the Flint Metro League, giving the conference its peak membership of 10. Due to the collegiate Big Ten Conference, the conference's name remained the Big Nine Conference. Membership in the Big Nine remained stable for the next 21 years, with only the newly merged Carman-Ainsworth taking Carman's place in the conference in 1986. The Charter Township of Flint, also known as Flint Township, is a charter township of Genesee County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 31,447 at the 2020 census. The City of Flint is adjacent to the township, but the two are administered autonomously. Background Wayne County was formed within the Northwest Territory covering the Lower Peninsula. Owosso, Michigan
Owosso () is the largest city in Shiawassee County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 14,714 at the 2020 census. It is located west of Flint, and northeast of Lansing. The city is mostly surrounded by Owosso Township on its west, but the two are administered autonomously. The city was named after Chief Wosso, an Ojibwe leader of the Shiawassee area. History 19th century Alfred L. and Benjamin O. Williams were early European-American settlers in the area. They were joined by Elias Comstock, who built the first permanent home in the settlement. Dr. John B. Barnes, a physician and a judge, and Sophronia King Barnes moved to Owosso in 1842. Owosso Public Schools is a public school district in Shiawassee County, Michigan. It serves Owosso and parts of Middletown, and parts of the townships of Bennington, Caledonia, Hazelton, New Haven, Middlebury, Owosso, Rush, Sciota, and Shiawassee. History School District No. 1 of Owosso Township, the current district's predecessor, was established in 1837. It was not until 1840 that a public school was built (at the southeast corner of Washington and Williams Streets) and instruction began, although the town had a private school that was held in a log house. Mount Morris is a city in Genesee County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 3,086 at the 2010 census. The city is bordered by Mount Morris Township on the west and Genesee Township on the east. It was named after Mount Morris, New York, because many of the early settlers had come from there. Kearsley Community School District is a public school district in Genesee County, residing in the U.S. state of Michigan and is part of the Genesee Intermediate School District. History Kearsley Community Schools is named after U.S. Army Major Jonathan Kearsley, who fought in the War of 1812.
