Big Flats is a community (and former census-designated place, which is now part of Big Flats CDP as of the 2010 census) located in the Town of Big Flats in Chemung County, New York, United States. As of the 2018 census, the location had a total population of 7,595. Big Flats is the location of the Elmira-Corning Regional Airport (ELM). It is part of the Elmira, New York Metropolitan Statistical Area. Geography Big Flats is located at 42°9'48" North, 76°52'47" West (42.163424, -76.879714). According to the United States Census Bureau, the location has a total area of , of which, of it is land and {{convert, 0.04, sqmi, km2 of it is water. The total area is 0.34% water. New York State Route 17 (Southern Tier Expressway) is an east–west highway crossing the area. Big Flats is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) within the town of Big Flats in Chemung County, New York, United States. The population of the CDP was 5,277 at the 2010 census, out of a total population in the town of 7,595. Geography The Big Flats CDP is located at (42.145087, -76.929869) and occupies the center and northeastern portions of the town of Big Flats. The CDP includes the hamlet of Big Flats in the west-center part of the town and Fisherville near the eastern border, as well as residential subdivisions in the areas between. New York State Route 17 (NY 17) is a major state highway that extends for through the Southern Tier and Downstate regions of New York in the United States. It begins at the Pennsylvania state line in Mina and follows the Southern Tier Expressway east through Corning to Binghamton and the Quickway from Binghamton east to Woodbury, where it turns south to follow the Orange Turnpike to the New Jersey state line near Suffern, where it connects to New Jersey Route 17. Elmira Corning Regional Airport is in Chemung County, New York, seven miles northwest of Elmira and eight miles east of Corning. It is in the town of Big Flats but its mailing address is Horseheads, New York. The airport was formerly Elmira Regional Airport.
