Big Crow
''Big Crow'' is a 2022 American documentary film directed by Kris Kaczor. The film examines the life and impact of SuAnne Big Crow, a young Lakota basketball player who used her talents to fight racism, violence, drugs and alcohol on Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. In 1989 Suanne made history, bringing the first-ever class A girls state basketball championship to a native high school. Her tragic death in a car accident in 1992 served to cement her legacy as an activist and gave power to a voice that remains effective today, thirty years after her death. The Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF) is an eleven-day film festival held in Santa Barbara, California since 1986. The festival boasts screenings of over 200 feature films and shorts from different countries and regions. SBIFF also includes celebrity tributes, industry panels and education programs. History Over the years, SBIFF has invited numerous potential award-winning celebrities, including Cate Blanchett, Guillermo Del Toro, Laura Dern, Leonardo DiCaprio, Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lawrence, Heath Ledger, Eddie Redmayne, Martin Scorsese, and Kate Winslet. SuAnne Big Crow
SuAnne Big Crow (March 15, 1974 – February 9, 1992) was a basketball player for the 1989 South Dakota champion Pine Ridge High School team. A member of the Oglala Sioux, she was born and raised on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in southwestern South Dakota, and died as a teenager in a car accident. SuAnne was featured in Ian Frazier's book ''On the Rez'', and in 2022, a feature-length documentary about her life, titled Big Crow, was released in the United States. Her basketball career was successful and dramatic: Big Crow made the last-second winning basket in the state Class A championship game. She was the best girl's player in South Dakota and scored an average of 39 points per game. Her 67 points in a single game was a state record. The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation ( lkt, Wazí Aháŋhaŋ Oyáŋke), also called Pine Ridge Agency, is an Oglala Lakota Indian reservation located entirely within the U.S. state of South Dakota. Originally included within the territory of the Great Sioux Reservation, Pine Ridge was created by the Act of March 2, 1889, 25 Stat. 888. in the southwest corner of South Dakota on the Nebraska border. Today it consists of of land area and is one of the largest reservations in the United States.
