Big Brother (UK)
''Big Brother'' is the British version of the international reality television franchise '' Big Brother'' created by producer John de Mol Jr. in 1997. Broadcast yearly from 18 July 2000 to 5 November 2018, and again from 8 October 2023, the show follows the format of other national editions, in which a group of contestants, known as "housemates", live together in a specially constructed house that is isolated from the outside world. Live television cameras and personal audio microphones continuously monitor them. Throughout the competition, housemates are "evicted" from the house by public televoting. The last remaining housemate wins the competition and a cash prize. The series is named after the fictional totalitarian dictator from George Orwell's 1949 novel ''Nineteen Eighty-Four''. ''Big Brother 2024'', also known as ''Big Brother 21'', was the twenty-first series of '' Big Brother''. It was the second civilian series of '' Big Brother'' to air on ITV2 after ITV plc gained the rights to the format, and the third series to air on the network overall. The series began on 6 October 2024 and was again co-presented by AJ Odudu and Will Best, who also returned to host the companion show, '' Big Brother: Late & Live''. The series concluded on 15 November 2024, when Ali Bromley was announced as the winner with Marcello Spooks finishing as the runner-up. Channel 4 is a British free-to-air public broadcast television channel owned and operated by Channel Four Television Corporation. E4 is a British free-to-air public broadcast television channel owned and operated by Channel Four Television Corporation. ''Big Brother 2018'', also known as ''Big Brother 19'' was the nineteenth series of '' Big Brother'', and the final series to air on Channel 5. The series launched four days after the final of '' Celebrity Big Brother 22'' on 14 September 2018 and lasted for 53 days with the final episode airing on 5 November 2018. ''Ultimate Big Brother'' was the final series of the British reality television programme '' Big Brother'' to air on Channel 4. The series was produced by Remarkable Pictures, a division of Endemol. Big Brother is a character and symbol in George Orwell's dystopian 1949 novel '' Nineteen Eighty-Four''. He is ostensibly the leader of Oceania, a totalitarian state wherein the ruling party, Ingsoc, wields total power "for its own sake" over the inhabitants. The ubiquitous slogan "Big Brother is watching you" serves as a constant reminder that Party members are not entitled to privacy. They are subject to constant surveillance to ensure their ideological purity. This is primarily through omnipresent telescreens that provide two-way video communication and constantly blare propaganda. This close surveillance does not extend to the "proles", who constitute the majority of Oceanic society. They are viewed as inferior beings whose ideas and opinions simply do not matter because they lack both the intelligence and conviction to recognize and assert their latent political power.
