Big Black (musician)
Danny "Big Black" Rey (1934) is an American actor, musician, and percussionist specializing in Latin and Ethnic Jazz music. After playing at clubs and hotels in Miami and in calypso bands in the Bahamas during the 1950s, he moved to New York in the early 1960s, working mostly with Randy Weston, as well as performing with Junior Cook. In 1965 he played with Dizzy Gillespie and Ray Bryant and performed and recorded with Freddie Hubbard. The following year he was back with Weston’s band at the Monterey Jazz Festival. Strata-East Records is an American record company and label specialising in jazz founded in 1971 by Charles Tolliver and Stanley Cowell with the release of their first recording ''Music Inc.'' The label released over 50 albums in the 1970s. Many of the label's releases are now hailed as prime examples of 1970s post-bop, spiritual jazz, and afro-jazz. Gil Scott-Heron recorded his 1974 album '' Winter in America'' with Brian Jackson for Strata-East. " The Bottle" featured on the album, was a popular single. ''Blue Spirits'' is an album by trumpeter Freddie Hubbard released on the Blue Note label. It would be his last studio album for Blue Note, recorded in the 1960s. It features performances by Hubbard, James Spaulding, Joe Henderson, Harold Mabern, Jr., Larry Ridley, Clifford Jarvis, Big Black, Kiane Zawadi, Hank Mobley, McCoy Tyner, Bob Cranshaw, Pete LaRoca.
