Guernsey ( ; Guernésiais: ''Guernési''; ) is the second-largest island in the Channel Islands, located west of the Cotentin Peninsula, Normandy. It is the largest island in the Bailiwick of Guernsey, which includes five other inhabited islands – Alderney, Herm, Jethou, Lihou and Sark – and many small islets and rocks. The bailiwick has a population of 63,950, the vast majority of whom live on Guernsey, and the island has a land area of . Guernsey was part of the Duchy of Normandy until 1204, when the Channel Islands remained loyal to the English crown, splitting from mainland Normandy. In 1290, the Channel Islands were divided administratively and Guernsey became part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey. During the World War II, Second World War, Guernsey was invaded and occupied by Nazi Germany. Havilland De Sausmarez
Sir Havilland Walter de Sausmarez, 1st Baronet (30 May 1861 – 5 March 1941) was a judge of various British colonial or consular courts in Africa and Asia, the Ottoman Empire and China. His last judicial position before retirement was chief judge of the British Supreme Court for China. He later served as bailiff of Guernsey. Early life Sausmarez was born on 30 May 1861, the son of the reverend Havilland de Sausmarez by his marriage to Anne Priaulx Walters. He was a scholar at Westminster, where he had a fine athletic record, including being Head of the Water. From there he went to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he continued his career as an athlete and graduated BA in 1883. In 1881, while still at Cambridge, he was admitted to the Inner Temple. He was called to the Bar in November 1884. He practised as a barrister in England on the Southern Eastern Circuit and then moved to Africa, where he began to practise in Lagos, Nigeria, in 1891. Ralph Durand
Ralph Anthony Durand (7 September 1876 – 20 December 1945) was an award-winning writer of novels, short stories and non-fiction. Much of his early writing was inspired by his travels in Australia and Africa. He served in the Boer War and World War I and was the librarian of the Priaulx Library between 1929 and 1945. He is best remembered for his works of non-fiction, particularly ''Guernsey Under German Rule'', a first hand account of the German occupation of the Channel Islands during World War II. Early life Ralph was born on 7 September 1876 in Earley, Berkshire, the son of the Rev Havilland Durand and his wife Mary née Hawtrey, where his father was the rector. The Durand family were descended from Huguenots who had sought refuge in the island of Guernsey following the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes. Marie de Garis MBE (''née'' Le Messurier; 15 June 1910 – 10 August 2010) was a Guernsey author and lexicographer who wrote the ''Dictiounnaire Angllais-Guernésiais'' (English-Guernésiais dictionary), the first edition of which was published in 1967. This new work largely superseded George Métivier's ''Dictionnaire Franco-Normand''. Robert Gordon Latham
Robert Gordon Latham FRS (24 March 1812 – 9 March 1888) was an English ethnologist and philologist. Early life The eldest son of Thomas Latham, vicar of Billingborough, Lincolnshire, he was born there on 24 March 1812. He entered Eton College in 1819, and in 1829 went on to King's College, Cambridge, where he graduated B.A. in 1832, and was soon afterwards elected a Fellow. Philologist Latham studied philology for a year on the continent, near Hamburg, then in Copenhagen with Rasmus Christian Rask, and finally in Christiania (now Oslo). In Norway he knew Ludvig Kristensen Daa and Henrik Wergeland; he wrote about the country in ''Norway and the Norwegians'' (1840). In 1839 he was elected professor of English language and literature in University College, London.
