Bhumjaithai
Bhumjaithai Party (BJT; , ) is a major conservative populist political party in Thailand. It was founded on 5 November 2008, in anticipation of the 2 December 2008 Constitutional Court ruling that dissolved its ''de facto'' predecessor, the Neutral Democratic Party (PMT), along with the People's Power Party (PPP) and the Thai Nation Party. After the dissolutions, former members of the PMT and the Friends of Newin (KPW) faction of the PPP, defected to this party. Currently, it is the second largest party in the opposition. Bhumjaithai has a populist platform, since some of the policies were drawn from Thaksin Shinawatra's populist Thai Rak Thai party and its second incarnation, the PPP. Anutin Charnvirakul
Anutin Charnvirakul (, ; born 13 September 1966) is a Thai politician who has served as the Minister of Interior and Deputy Prime Minister since 2023. From 2019 to 2023 he was the Minister of Public Health in Prayut Chan-o-cha's government and was the prominent public figure in charge of managing the COVID-19 pandemic in Thailand. Anutin has been a member of several political parties such as the National Development Party, Thai Rak Thai Party and is currently the leader of the Bhumjaithai Party. 2011 Thai General Election
General elections were held in Thailand on 3 July 2011 to elect the 24th House of Representatives. The protestors of the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) or " Red Shirts" who occupied downtown Bangkok in April and May 2010 had demanded new elections. The government's counter-proposal to hold elections on 14 November 2010 was rejected by them and was followed by a violent crackdown when the protestors refused to disperse. Elections were finally announced in May 2011. With a turnout of 75%, populist Pheu Thai Party won a majority with 265 seats. Its leader Yingluck Shinawatra became the first female prime minister in the history of Thailand. The Democrat Party therefore became the main opposition party with a total of 159 seats. The House of Representatives (, , ) is the lower house of the National Assembly of Thailand, the legislative branch of the Thai government. The system of government of Thailand is that of a constitutional monarchy and a parliamentary democracy. The system of the Thai legislative branch is modelled after the Westminster system. The House of Representatives has 500 members, of which 400 are elected through single member constituency elections, while the other 100 are chosen through party lists parallel voting. Chavarat Charnvirakul
Chavarat Charnvirakul (, , ; born 7 June 1936) is a Thai politician. He had served as an acting prime minister of Thailand as a result of the 2008 Thai political crisis. His family is of Thai Chinese descent with ancestry from Guangdong. Education Chavarat graduated from Thammasat University in 1966 with a degree in economics. Political career After spending many years in the public sector, he joined the government in 1994 as Deputy Minister of Finance, his tenure lasted till 1997. In 2008 he rejoined the government as Minister of Public Health and later Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand. On 2 December 2008, the Constitutional Court ordered the dissolution of the People's Power Party and other coalition parties, at the same time banning their chief executives. Neutral Democratic Party
The Neutral Democratic Party (PMT; Thai: พรรคมัชฌิมาธิปไตย) was a short-lived populist political party in Thailand founded in 2007 by Somsak Thepsuthin, a former Thai Rak Thai Party cabinet minister. The party had a similar populist line to the Thai Rak Thai and was expected to secure votes from Thai Rak Thai supporters. The party was dissolved by the Constitutional Court in 2008 and party members subsequently moved to the Bhumjaithai Party. The party was planned to merge with the For the Motherland Party and later on the Royalist People's Party, however, both plans were annulled. The Democrat Party () is a conservative List of political parties in Thailand, Thai political party. The party is the oldest active political party in Thailand, it was founded in 1946 as a royalist party; it now upholds a Conservatism, liberal-conservative and Market economy, pro-market position. Newin Chidchob (, born 4 October 1958) is a Thai politician from Buriram Province. As a member of several political parties, Newin and his allies eventually joined the Thai Rak Thai Party of Thaksin Shinawatra in 2005. Prior to the 2006 Thai coup d'état, he served as a member of Parliament for Buriram Province and was a Cabinet Minister with the Thai Rak Thai Party. From 2002 to 2005, he was Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives. Anupong Paochinda
Anupong Paochinda (; ; born 10 October 1949) is a Thai politician and retired army officer. He held the position of Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Army from 2007 until his retirement on 30 September 2010.
