''Beyond the Last Frontier'' is a 1943 American Western film about an undercover Texas Ranger, John Paul Revere, within Big Bill Hadley's gang of crooks. Howard Bretherton directed the film and John K. Butler and Morton Grant wrote the screenplay. The film stars Eddie Dew as Johnny Revere, Harry Woods as Big Bill Hadley, Robert Mitchum as Trigger Dolan, Lorraine Miller as Susan Cook, and Smiley Burnette as Frog Millhouse. Howard Bretherton
Howard Bretherton (13 February 1890, in Tacoma, Washington – 12 April 1969, in San Diego, California) was an American film director, film editor, and the father of film editor David Bretherton. Career He began his career as a propman and then became a film editor during the early 1920s for MGM. He directed his first film, ''While London Sleeps'', in 1926, and thereafter spent more than three decades working mostly as a film director. Of the roughly 100 pictures he directed, most of them were westerns and action/adventure films. The final film he directed was '' Night Raiders'' in 1952. Afterwards, he occasionally worked as a director in television through 1958. ''Pride of the Plains'' is a 1944 American Western film directed by Wallace Fox and written by John K. Butler and Robert Creighton Williams. The film stars Robert Livingston, Smiley Burnette, Nancy Gay, Steve Barclay, Kenneth MacDonald and Charles Miller. The film was released on January 5, 1944, by Republic Pictures. Plot Laws that protect wild horses frustrate cowboy Dan Hurley (Kenneth MacDonald) who wants to sell the horses. In an effort to get the laws changed, Hurley has his shady partners paint his trained horse to disguise it, then get the horse to kill a man; all in an effort to get his petition signed. Hero Johnny Revere (Robert Livingston) finds suspicious traces of paint on a horse, and attempts to arrest the Hurley gang. Harry Woods (actor)
Harry Lewis Woods (May 5, 1889 – December 28, 1968) was an American film actor. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Woods was a millinery salesman prior to becoming an actor. He appeared in nearly 250 films between 1923 and 1958. During his 35-year film career he acquired a reputation as a screen villain ''par excellence''; his imposing size, powerful build, piercing eyes and snarling voice typed him as a bad guy to be reckoned with. He seldom played ordinary henchmen, usually cast as both the brains (the banker or saloon owner who secretly runs the bandit gang terrorizing the area) and the brawn behind the local villainy. He was well respected by his peers. Another prime screen villain, Roy Barcroft, once said of him, "Everything I know about being a bad guy I learned from Harry Woods." He enjoyed a long career in films before retiring in 1958, and he died in Los Angeles ten years later from uremia. Eddie Dew (January 29, 1909 – April 6, 1972) was an American actor, film director, and television director. As an actor, he is best remembered for his starring roles in B movie western films during the 1940s. In the 1950s he became active in directing both for film and television, most notably for the television series ''Sergeant Preston of the Yukon''. Career Dew was born in Sumner, Washington, and began his acting career in the mid 1930s, appearing in small film roles. His first film roles of any substance were as Captain Kendall in ''Military Academy'' (1940) and Henchman French in ''Dude Cowboy'' (1941). His first starring role was as Scott Yager in '' Red River Robin Hood'' (1942). This was followed by two leading roles for Republic Pictures in the westerns ''Beyond the Last Frontier'' (1943) and '' Raiders of Sunset Pass'' (1943).
