Beverly Harvard
Beverly Joyce Bailey Harvard (born December 22, 1950) is a former police chief of Atlanta, Georgia, and the first black female police chief of a major city in the United States. Biography Beverly Joyce Bailey was born in Macon, Georgia, on December 22, 1950, the youngest of seven children. At the age of 22, she graduated from Morris Brown College in Atlanta with a Bachelor of Arts in sociology. In 1973, her husband, Jimmy, and one of his friends bet her $100 that she could not become a police officer. She accepted the bet and was hired as an officer in the Atlanta Police Department, where she spent several years performing night foot patrols in high-crime areas. In 1979, she was promoted to affirmative action specialist and then to director of public affairs in 1980, where she handled media inquiries regarding the Atlanta child murders. Atlanta Chief Of Police
There have been many police chiefs of the Atlanta Police Department in the history of Atlanta, Georgia United States. The city shifted from a rural, Marshal/Deputy Marshal model in 1873. The current interim police chief is Darin Schierbaum. The city is in the process of conducting a nationwide search for a permanent chief. Schierbaum succeeded former police chief Rodney N. Bryant. Bryant took the helm after former chief Erika Shields resigned following the killing of Rayshard Brooks. Bryant served as interim police chief until the city named him as chief in June of 2020. Chief Schierbaum joined the Atlanta Police Department in 2002. Otherside Lounge Bombing
The Otherside Lounge bombing was a domestic terrorist pipe bombing attack that occurred on February 21, 1997, in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. At approximately 9:45 p.m., a bomb exploded at the Otherside Lounge lesbian bar that damaged the building and destroyed several cars in the parking lot. While no one was killed, five people were injured, including one critically injured patron. The bombing had been carried out by Eric Rudolph, a serial bomber who had previously committed the Centennial Olympic Park bombing in 1996 that was responsible for two deaths, and he had targeted the nightclub due to his strong opposition to the gay rights movement. In the aftermath of the bombing, investigators were able to link the bombing to the Centennial Olympic Park bombing and to a nearby bombing of an abortion clinic. Georgia Ann Robinson
Georgia Ann Robinson (née Hill; May 12, 1879 – September 21, 1961) was an American police officer and community worker who was the first African American woman to be appointed a police officer at the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD); she was also one of the first Black policewomen to be hired in the country. She joined the force in 1916 as a volunteer jail matron and was appointed an officer in 1919. She worked on juvenile and homicide cases, as well as cases with black women. She often referred the people she came in contact with to social agencies. Her police career ended when she permanently lost her sight after being injured by a prisoner. Robinson was also an activist who founded the Sojourner Truth Home, a shelter for women and girls, while working on the force. After retiring, Robinson continued her community activism, working with the NAACP, volunteering in shelters, and campaigning to desegregate schools and beaches. Penny Harrington
Penny E. Harrington (March 2, 1942 – September 15, 2021) was an American police officer who became the first female chief of the Portland Police Bureau, making her the first female to head a major police department in the United States. Career Harrington began working as a policewoman in 1964, when there were only 12 women in her department. She was appointed chief of the Portland Police Bureau in January 1985. An investigative report characterized her administration as a failure after 17 months. The recommendation by a three-member panel appointed by Mayor Bud Clark resulted in her resignation in 1986. In 1987 Harrington filed a federal sex discrimination suit claiming that members of the police department "conspired to embarrass and drive her from office", making it difficult for her to obtain employment following her "forced" resignation.
