Beverly D. Stakes
The Beverly D. Stakes is a Grade II flat horse race in the United States for thoroughbred fillies and mares aged three years and upward over a distance of miles at Colonial Downs in New Kent County, Virginia. The event is a supporting stakes race on the Arlington Million racing program. Churchill Downs, whose parent company owns the land of the defunct Arlington Park racetrack, hosted the Beverly D. Stakes in 2022. The 2023 race was run at Churchill-owned Colonial Downs in Virginia. History The race was first run in 1987, but was not run the following season due to refurbishment at Arlington Park. It became a Grade I race in 1991. It was also not run in 1998/99 as the track was closed during this time. The event was a Breeders' Cup Challenge "Win and You're In" qualifier for the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf. Colonial Downs
Colonial Downs is a Race track, racetrack located in New Kent County, Virginia adjacent to Interstate 64, halfway between Richmond, Virginia, Richmond and Williamsburg, Virginia, Williamsburg. The track conducted Thoroughbred flat racing and Standardbred harness racing between 1997 and 2014, and reopened for thoroughbreds in 2019. It is owned and operated by Churchill Downs, Inc. History and information The track opened on September 1, 1997. More than 13,000 attended the track on opening day. The track used several unconventional construction and business approaches. They constructed one of the largest tracks in size in the country but built a relatively small clubhouse. They also built Off-track betting, OTBs prior to the opening of the track. The track also struck a deal with Maryland to stop Maryland racing during the Colonial Downs thoroughbred meet, although this later ended. Flawlessly
Flawlessly (1988–2002) was an American Thoroughbred race horse bred by Harbor View Farm. She was a daughter of 1978 Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing champion Affirmed and La Confidence by Nijinsky II. At two, she trained under Dick Dutrow, winning her first stakes victories, the Tempted Stakes and the Gardenia Stakes, both Grade III events. She came third in the Grade I Frizette Stakes. At three, she was sent to California to be trained by Charlie Whittingham. With Wittingham, who chose her few races carefully, she won four turf stakes in a row. By the end of her third year, she had won five stakes, including the Grade I Matriarch Stakes, the first of her three Matriarch victories. She also finished second in the Grade I Yellow Ribbon Stakes. Flawlessly raced for five years, from age two to six. In each season except her first, she won at least one Grade I race. Sistercharlie (foaled 13 March 2014) is a champion Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse who won the 2018 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf and was the 2018 Champion Female Turf Horse. She also won the Prix Penelope, Jenny Wiley Stakes, Diana Stakes twice, and Beverly D. Stakes twice. ''The Blood-Horse'' (also referred to simply as ''Blood-Horse'' and displayed on its nameplate in upright all-capital letters without hyphenation as BLOODHORSE) is a news magazine that originated in 1916 as a monthly bulletin of the Thoroughbred Horse Association. The corresponding online website publication is Bloodhorse.com. In 1935 the publication was purchased by the American Thoroughbred Breeders Association. From 1961 to 2015, it was owned by the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA), a non-profit organization that promotes Thoroughbred racing, breeding, and ownership.
