Bettina Staiger
Bettina Staiger (born 1968) is a German lichenologist known for her systematic studies of tropical lichen families, particularly the Graphidaceae. Born in Stuttgart, she completed her doctoral research at the University of Regensburg under Klaus Kalb's supervision, defending her dissertation on Graphidaceae taxonomy in 2002. Her research combines traditional morphological methods with chemotaxonomy and molecular phylogenetics, producing influential monographs on several lichen genera including '' Haematomma'', ''Diorygma'', and '' Ramboldia''. The International Plant Names Index (IPNI) describes itself as "a database of the names and associated basic bibliographical details of seed plants, ferns and lycophytes." Coverage of plant names is best at the rank of species and genus. It includes basic bibliographical details associated with the names. Its goals include eliminating the need for repeated reference to primary sources for basic bibliographic information about plant names. The IPNI also maintains a list of standardized Author citation (botany), author abbreviations. These were initially based on Authors of Plant Names, Brummitt & Powell (1992), but new names and abbreviations are continually added. In biological taxonomy, circumscription is the content of a taxon, that is, the delimitation of which subordinate taxa are parts of that taxon. For example, if we determine that species X, Y, and Z belong in genus A, and species T, U, V, and W belong in genus B, those are our circumscriptions of those two genera. Another systematist might determine that T, U, V, W, X, Y, and Z all belong in genus A. Agreement on circumscriptions is not governed by the Codes of Zoological or Botanical Nomenclature, and must be reached by scientific consensus. A goal of biological taxonomy is to achieve a stable circumscription for every taxon. Haematomma Staigeriae
''Haematomma staigeriae'' is a species of corticolous (bark-dwelling) lichen in the family Haematommataceae. Found in Costa Rica, it was formally described as a new species in 2006 by Matthew Nelsen, Robert Lücking, and Loengrin Umaña. The type specimen was collected by the second author from the Talamanca Ridge in the Pacific La Amistad Conservation Area (Puntarenas) at an elevation between . Here, in a montane rainforest area with secondary vegetation dominated by ''Cecropia'', the species was found growing on the lower trunks of trees. It is only known from the type locality. The specific epithet honours the German lichenologist Bettina Staiger "for her contribution to the taxonomy and understanding of this genus".
