Betsy Ross Air Corps
The Betsy Ross Air Corps (1931–1933) was a pre–World War II organization of female pilots formed to support the United States Army Air Corps, Army Air Corps and to be of service in times of emergency. Founded during the Great Depression by aviator Opal Kunz and named after American Revolutionary War, Revolutionary War hero Betsy Ross, the short-lived corps was never formally recognized by the U.S. military. History The founder of the Betsy Ross Air Corps, aviator Opal Kunz, had been disappointed that an earlier organization of women aviators, the Ninety-Nines, had not answered her goal of creating a women's national defense corps. United States Army Air Corps
The United States Army Air Corps (USAAC) was the aerial warfare service component of the United States Army between 1926 and 1941. After World War I, as early aviation became an increasingly important part of modern warfare, a philosophical rift developed between more traditional ground-based army personnel and those who felt that aircraft were being underutilized and that air operations were being stifled for political reasons unrelated to their effectiveness. The USAAC was renamed from the earlier United States Army Air Service on 2 July 1926, and was part of the larger United States Army. The Air Corps became the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) on 20 June 1941, giving it greater autonomy from the Army's middle-level command structure. Manila Davis
Manila Davis Talley (1898–1973) was the first woman from West Virginia to earn a pilot's license. She was a founding member of the Betsy Ross Air Corps, a private female auxiliary for the Army Air Corps, and the third woman to complete training at the Air Force War College. Early life and education Talley was born Manila Carolyn Davis in Flatwoods, Braxton County, West Virginia. She attended West Virginia University and later transferred to the New England Conservatory to study piano and drama. After becoming interested in aviation, Talley enrolled in a Curtiss-Wright mechanics course and attended the M.I.T. Guggenheim School of Aeronautics. The Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) (also Women's Army Service Pilots or Women's Auxiliary Service Pilots) was a civilian women pilots' organization, whose members were United States federal civil service employees. Members of WASP became trained pilots who tested aircraft, ferried aircraft, and trained other pilots. Their purpose was to free male pilots for combat roles during World War II. Despite various members of the armed forces being involved in the creation of the program, the WASP and its members had no military standing. Hattie Meyers Weaver Junkin (1896–1990) was a pioneer female aviator and the first woman to earn a glider class C license. Early life Hattie Meyers was born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey. As a child, she built model airplanes with her brother, Charlie. Aviation career Hattie and her first husband, George "Buck" Weaver, lived in Waco, Texas, while he was stationed at Camp MacArthur. Buck was a US Naval reservist who worked in aviation during World War I. After the war, the couple moved to Chicago, where their son was born. The family relocated again to Ohio where Buck, Elwood J.
