Betong, Sarawak
Betong is a town in Betong Division in Sarawak, Malaysia, lying in the Saribas area. It used to be placed under the district of Sri Aman. Location Betong division is located between three main rivers, Batang Lupar, Batang Saribas and Batang Kelaka, covering an area of 4,180 km2. Population By October 2011, the population was nearly 94,000, the majority being Ibans (51,290), followed by Malays (37,283), Chinese (5,084), Bidayuh (225), and Melanau (219), while the remaining are other races. Economy Main areas are farming, agriculture and fishing but there are some who work in the public and private sectors as well as business (most businesses are family-owned). Betong Division
Betong Division, formed on 26 March 2002, is one of the twelve administrative divisions in Sarawak, Malaysia. Formerly part of Sri Aman Division, Betong is in the Saribas area. It has a total area of 4,180.8 square kilometres, and is the smallest of the administrative divisions of Sarawak. Saribas is famous for its Iban longhouses and is regarded as the center for Iban culture. It was annexed to Sarawak by Rajah James Brooke, after his victory over the Sekrang and Saribas Iban at the Battle of Beting Maru on 31 July 1849. Betong Division contains two administrative districts: Betong and Saratok. The total population is 99,800. The population is culturally mixed, with the majority Iban interacting well with the Malay and Chinese in almost all spheres of activity since the pre-colonial days. Betong ( th, เบตง, ; ms, Betung ( Jawi: بيتوڠ ) ; ) is a town (''thesaban mueang'') in southern Thailand, near the Malaysian border. It is the capital of Betong District, the southernmost district of Yala Province. As of 2005, the town has a population of 24,688. Betong is the southernmost town of Thailand and its location on the border with the Malaysian state of Perak makes it popular with tourists. Etymology The name ''Betong'' is actually the Thai corruption of ''Betung''. Its original Malay name means 'bamboo'. Alberto Sermonia Sumaya Jr. (born November 21, 1975), popularly known as Betong Sumaya, is a Filipino comedian, actor, and former production assistant for GMA Network, where he is also a part of the network's talent agency. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Filipino and a minor in mass communication from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines.
