Bethlehem Cemetery
The Bethlehem Cemetery is a historic cemetery in rural Washington County, Arkansas, United States. It is located about south of Canehill, near the junction of Arkansas Highway 45 and County Road 442. With its first documented burial in 1832, it is one of the oldest cemeteries in the county, and it is the only surviving remnant of the small frontier community of Bethlehem, which was established in 1827. The cemetery contains the remains of some of the area's earliest settlers, including the wife of preacher John Carnahan, who is believed to be the first person buried in the cemetery. The cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. Canehill, Arkansas
Canehill, also known as Cane Hill and Boonsboro, is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Washington County, Arkansas, United States. It was first listed as a CDP in the 2020 census with a population of 74. The community is located in the Ozark Mountains on the outskirts of the Northwest Arkansas metropolitan area. One of the most historic communities in the state, Canehill contains seventeen listings on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The Cane Hill College began operations in 1834, which led to the rapid growth and development of the community as a center of higher education. The college and community suffered during the American Civil War, and was bypassed by the railroad, which chose a route through Lincoln. Recently, restoration and preservation of many historic buildings has been undertaken by a nonprofit organization, Historic Cane Hill Inc. Arkansas Highway 45 (AR 45) is a designation for three state highways in Northwest Arkansas. One segment of runs from Highway 96 north to Interstate 540 (I-540) in Fort Smith. A second segment of runs from Highway 59 north of Dutch Mills north to U.S. Route 62 (US 62) east of Lincoln. A third segment of runs from College Avenue in Fayetteville north to Highway 12 west of Clifty. These routes were formerly connected until a portion of approximately was redesignated Highway 59 and many United States highways were rerouted through Fayetteville.
