Bethel Marthoma Church is a Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church located at Chengara, Pathanamthitta, Kerala, India. Bethel Marthoma Church belongs to the Ranni Nilackal Diocese of Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church. It is the biggest church in Chengara in terms of membership. Like all other Malankara Churches, St James liturgy is used in Bethel Marthoma Church for worship. History Before 1978, there were no church for Marthomites in Chengara. They had to rely on Marthoma churches in other villages for worship. When this became difficult for local population, some Marthomite people of that time in Chengara gathered together and discussed about the need of a Marthoma church in Chengara. Chengara
Chengara is a small village situated in the Pathanamthitta district in Kerala, India. It is known for its natural environment, hills and climate, and was found to have the cleanest air, in terms of concentration of dust particles. Chengara is surrounded on three sides by Harrisons Malayalam Limited, a rubber plantation company. The Saint Thomas Christians, also called Syrian Christians of India, ''Marthoma Suriyani Nasrani'', ''Malankara Nasrani'', or ''Nasrani Mappila'', are an ethno-religious community of Indian Christians in the state of Kerala ( Malabar region), who, for the most part, employ the Eastern and Western liturgical rites of Syriac Christianity. Early days Palakunnathu family In the seventeenth century Kerala, a member of the Panamkuzhy house of Kuruvalingadu, Kuruvilla came and settled in Kozhencherry on the banks of river Pampa. Later, he and his three sons moved to Maramon and lived at Chackkalyil on the other side of the river. The second son's second son in that family, Mathen, moved to a nearby house at Palakunnathu. James, Brother Of Jesus

Theodosius Mar Thoma
Theodosius Mar Thoma XXII Metropolitan (born 19 February 1949) is the Mar Thoma Metropolitan and the Primate of the Mar Thoma Syrian Church. Theodosius Mar Thoma presently occupies the Apostolic Throne of St Thomas and is also the first Mar Thoma Metropolitan to be born in post-independence India. Ordination Theodosius studied at Baselius College, Kottayam (1966) and Mar Thoma College, Thiruvalla (1969).
