Beth Morrison
Beth Morrison is an American producer of contemporary opera. Morrison is known for her collaborations with many artists through her company Beth Morrison Projects includes composers David T. Little, Missy Mazzoli, Du Yun, Paola Prestini, Kamala Sankaram, Darcy James Argue, and David Lang (composer), David Lang, librettist Royce Vavrek, and performers Lauren Worsham, Abigail Fischer, Nathan Gunn and Courtney Love. With Kim Whitener and Kristin Marting of Here Arts Center, HERE Arts Center, she created Prototype Festival, PROTOTYPE Festival, an annual festival of premier opera-theatre and music-theatre by pioneering artists from New York City and around the world. Dog Days (opera)
''Dog Days'' is an opera by David T. Little, to a libretto by Royce Vavrek after the short story by Judy Budnitz. Performance history ''Dog Days'' was produced by Peak Performances at the Montclair State University (New Jersey) in association with Beth Morrison Projects, and had its world premiere run from September 29 to October 7, 2012. Robert Woodruff directed the production that starred Lauren Worsham and performance artist John Kelly. Scenic and video design was created by Jim Findlay, costume design by Vita Tzykun, and sound design by Matt Frey. Alan Pierson was the production's Musical Director and conductor, with new music ensemble Newspeak serving as the on-stage band. Sarah Kirkland Snider
Sarah Kirkland Snider (born October 8, 1973) is an American composer. She has received critical acclaim for her chamber, orchestral, song cycle, choral, and ballet works. Biography Snider was born and raised in Princeton, New Jersey. Despite a non-musical parentage, she had a self-professed musical itch from a young age, going as far as to knock on her neighbors’ doors to play their pianos by ear. Eventually, Snider began formal music study, beginning piano at age 7 and cello at age 10. She also sang in choirs, attending five years of summer camp at the American Boychoir School where she studied under Anton Armstrong. She later attended Princeton High School, singing in a nationally celebrated high school choir under William Trego, and performing in the PHS Orchestra. Ellen Reid (born 1983) is an American composer originally from Oak Ridge, Tennessee and living and working in New York City and Los Angeles. Reid is a multi-genre composer whose breadth of work spans classical, opera, sound installations, film scoring, avant-pop, ensemble and choral writing. She is known for her Pulitzer Prize-winning opera, ''p r i s m'', ''Ellen Reid SOUNDWALK'' and her work with various orchestras around the world, including the album '' isomonstrosity''. ''Prism'' (styled as ''p r i s m'') is a 2018 opera by Ellen Reid that explores the post-traumatic stress experience after sexual assault. Reid received the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for Music for her work on the opera. Composition history Ellen Reid began composing ''Prism'' in 2015 along with librettist Roxie Perkins. Reid and Perkins, both survivors of sexual assault themselves, began working on the opera as a way to help overcome their own trauma. "We started working on the piece about five years ago, before the #MeToo movement, before there was a kind of shift in thinking about what it meant to be a survivor. And it felt really important." ''Breaking the Waves'' is an opera in three acts by Missy Mazzoli with a libretto by Royce Vavrek. It is based on the 1996 Breaking the Waves, film of the same name by Danish auteur Lars von Trier. The opera was first performed on September 22, 2016, by Opera Philadelphia. Commissioning and performances The opera was commissioned and premiered by Opera Philadelphia. The New York City Prototype Festival showed this production in three performances in January 2017 at the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts.
