Beth Mardutho
Beth Mardutho (full name: Beth Mardutho: The Syriac Institute) is an American educational institute specializing in Syriac studies. Founded by George Kiraz, the institute is based in Piscataway, New Jersey, U.S. History The institute was originally informally founded by George A. Kiraz as the Syriac Computing Institute (SyrCOM) in 1992. SyrCOM was officially registered in 1996. In 2009, it was renamed as Beth Mardutho when Kiraz expanded the institute's activities beyond computational linguistics to include different aspects of Syriac studies. Since 2014, the institute has been offering Syriac language summer courses. George Kiraz
George Anton Kiraz (; born 1965) is a Syriac scholar, best known for his contribution to modern Syriac studies. Early life George Kiraz was born in Bethlehem to a Syriac Orthodox merchant family which traces its roots back to Elazığ in Anatolia. He learned Syriac at the Monastery of Saint Mark, Jerusalem. In 1983 he emigrated with his family to the United States where they settled in Los Angeles. Education Kiraz holds numerous degrees, including a B.Sc. degree in Engineering from California State University, Northridge in 1990, a master's degree in Syriac Studies from the University of Oxford in 1991, a master's degree in computer speech and language processing, and a Ph.D. degree in computational linguistics from the University of Cambridge in 1992 and 1996 respectively. Syriac studies is the study of the Syriac language and Syriac Christianity. A specialist in Syriac studies is known as a Syriacist. Specifically, British, French, and German scholars of the 18th and 19th centuries who were involved in the study of Syriac/Aramaic language and literature were commonly known by this designation, at a time when the Syriac language was little understood outside Assyrian and Maronite Christian communities, as well as larger communities adhering to Syriac Christianity.
