Beta Sigma Phi International () is an international noncollegiate sorority with 200,000 members. Founded in Abilene, Kansas, Abilene Kansas, in 1931 by Walter W. Rose, Walter W. Ross "for the social, cultural, and civic enrichment of its members", the organization now has chapters throughout the United States, Canada, and other countries. History The organization began under the name The National What to Read Club. Walter W. Rose, Walter W. Ross, the founder of Beta Sigma Phi, visited Vinita, Oklahoma, where librarian Leona Schroers agreed to help establish a chapter. The original group consisted of seven members in Abilene, Kansas, Abilene Kansas. Schroers introduced Ross to Sally Rogers McSpadden, sister of the humorist Will Rogers. McSpadden, who was active in the Oklahoma Federation of Women's Clubs and other women's organizations, advised Ross to change the organization from an association to its present form and to change its name. Abilene (pronounced ) is a city in and the county seat of Dickinson County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, the population of the city was 6,460. Betty Boyd (Oklahoma Legislator)
Betty Carman Boyd (December 9, 1924 – January 6, 2011) was a longtime Tulsa television personality and a member of the Oklahoma State House of Representatives. Considered a pioneer for women in both fields, Boyd began her career in television in 1955 and was elected as a state legislator in 1990, serving until 2000. Early life Betty Boyd was born in 1924 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Ted and Marie (Fairchild) Carman. Boyd was raised by her mother, grandmother, and several maiden aunts. Miss Pennsylvania
The Miss Pennsylvania competition is the pageant that selects the representative for the state of Pennsylvania in the Miss America pageant. Pennsylvania, including early years' city representatives, has won the Miss America crown on five occasions. Originally held in Hershey, the pageant moved to West Chester where pageants were held during the 1950s. The pageant was held in Altoona from 1974. In 1994, Easton was chosen as the new venue of the pageant and the date was shifted from June to May. In November 2008, the pageant was moved to the Pittsburgh area. In 2019, the competition moved to York, Pennsylvania. Tina Louise Thomas
Tina Louise Thomas is a former Miss Pennsylvania (1973) and Miss America scholarship pageant national talent winner and 4th runner-up (1974), as well as being a musician and writer. Thomas was baptized Christina Hatzithomas in her father's Greek Orthodox church. (Hatzi is a preface to a family name given to descendants of ancestors baptized in the River Jordan). Jack Alvin "Alvy" Moore (December 5, 1921 – May 4, 1997) was an American actor best known for his role as scatterbrained county agricultural agent Hank Kimball on the CBS television series '' Green Acres''. Alene E. Holt (sometimes spelled Aileen Holt) was the first female alderman for Peterborough, Ontario, elected in 1959 and the first female mayor, appointed in 1962. Holt was involved in many community causes in the city of Peterborough including efforts to support the Second World War through victory bonds and volunteer service groups like the Kinettes. Holt was also a columnist for the ''Peterborough Examiner'', particularly writing about women's issues. Maie Bartlett Heard (1868–1951) was an Arizona-based collector and philanthropist, who cofounded the Heard Museum of native American art. Background Born on June 11, 1868, in Chicago, to parents Adolphus C. Bartlett and Mary Pitkin. Alice Henson Ernst (September 3, 1880 – February 12, 1980) was an American playwright, professor and author. She conducted anthropological work among the Native Americans in Oregon. Ernst was also well-known for her history and research of pioneer theater in the northwest. Ernst taught English and drama at the University of Washington and the University of Oregon.
