Best Bit
''Best Bit'' is an EP released by Beth Orton, prior to her 1999 release ''Central Reservation''. It contains two songs performed with Terry Callier, which are covers of Fred Neil's "Dolphins", and Callier's own "Lean on me". The title track appears in an alternative version on Orton's own single, "She Cries Your Name". It peaked at #36 in the UK official singles chart. The cover was photographed by Sam Harris. The video was directed by Steve Hanft. Beth Orton
Elizabeth Caroline Orton (born 14 December 1970) is an English musician, known for her " folktronica" sound, which mixes elements of folk and electronica. She was initially recognised for her collaborations with William Orbit, Andrew Weatherall, Red Snapper and the Chemical Brothers in the mid-1990s. Her UK/US first solo album, '' Trailer Park'', received much critical acclaim in 1996. Orton developed a devoted audience with the release of the BRIT Award-winning album ''Central Reservation'' (1999) and the 2002 UK top 10 album, '' Daybreaker''. Her 2006 album, '' Comfort of Strangers'', was followed by a break during which Orton gave birth to her daughter and collaborated with the British guitarist Bert Jansch. Martin Glover
Martin Glover (born 27 December 1960), better known by his stage name Youth, is a British record producer and musician, best known as a founding member and bassist of the rock band Killing Joke. He is also a member of the Fireman, along with Paul McCartney. Early career Martin Glover was born on 27 December 1960 in Slough, at that point part of Buckinghamshire, England. He attended Kingham Hill School, an independent private school in Oxfordshire, where he met Alex Paterson, who would become a roadie for Glover's band Killing Joke, and later founder of The Orb. The Blow Monkeys are a British new wave/ sophisti-pop band that formed in 1981. The first single, "Live Today Love Tomorrow," was released in 1982. They subsequently enjoyed a successful career with several hit singles and albums across the 1980s before splitting up at the beginning of the 1990s. ''Trailer Park'' is the solo debut album by British singer Beth Orton. Combining folk, electronica, and trip hop elements, it earned Orton two BRIT Award nominations. One single from the album was the opening track, " She Cries Your Name", which previously appeared in a different form on William Orbit's album ''Strange Cargo Hinterland''. All songs were co-written by Orton except for a cover version of Phil Spector's "I Wish I Never Saw the Sunshine." ''Central Reservation'' is the second studio album by English singer-songwriter Beth Orton, released on 9 March 1999. The album featured contributions from folk musician Terry Callier (with whom she also recorded the b-side "Lean on Me"), Dr. Robert and Ben Harper. Several tracks were also produced by Ben Watt of Everything but the Girl. Terry Callier
Terrence Orlando "Terry" Callier (May 24, 1945 – October 27, 2012) was an American soul, folk and jazz guitarist and singer-songwriter. Life and career Callier was born in the North Side of Chicago, Illinois, and was raised in the Cabrini–Green housing area. He learned piano, was a childhood friend of Curtis Mayfield, Major Lance and Jerry Butler, and began singing in doo-wop groups in his teens. In 1962 he took an audition at Chess Records, where he recorded his debut single, "Look at Me Now". At the same time as attending college, he then began performing in folk clubs and coffee houses in Chicago, becoming strongly influenced by the music of John Coltrane. During this period, he briefly performed in a duo with David Crosby in Chicago and New York City. He met Samuel Charters of Prestige Records in 1964, and the following year they recorded his debut album. Fred Neil (March 16, 1936 – July 7, 2001) was an American folk singer-songwriter active in the 1960s and early 1970s. He did not achieve commercial success as a performer and is mainly known through other people's recordings of his material – particularly " Everybody's Talkin", which became a hit for Harry Nilsson after it was used in the film ''Midnight Cowboy'' in 1969. Though highly regarded by contemporary folk singers, he was reluctant to tour and spent much of the last 30 years of his life assisting with the preservation of dolphins. She Cries Your Name
"She Cries Your Name" is a song by Beth Orton. It was released as her third single and found on her 1996 debut album '' Superpinkymandy'' and again, as a slightly different version, on her 1996 release ''Trailer Park''. It was also re-released in 1997, with a different set of B-sides. Background An early version of "She Cries Your Name" appeared on the 1995 William Orbit album ''Strange Cargo Hinterland''. This version was substantially different from Orton's solo versions, removing most of the folk elements. Orton would later repurpose her chorus on the Orton song, sung repeatedly with layered vocals, as the chorus of her solo version of the track. The 1996 re-release of "She Cries Your Name" was the lead single from ''Trailer Park''. Both releases contain 4 songs, and were released on CD and vinyl.
