Bessvatnet
Bessvatnet is a glacial lake in Vågå Municipality in Innlandet county, Norway. The lake is located in the Jotunheimen mountain range and also inside the Jotunheimen National Park. The lake lies just east of the mountain Besshø. The lake Bessvatnet is known to everyone that has hiked the Besseggen ridge, as the narrow mountain ridge runs between the southern end of the dark blue lake Bessvatnet on one side of the ridge and the green lake Gjende lies below the other side of the ridge. Name ''Bessvatnet'' is named after the river ''Bessa''. The last element is the finite form of ''vatn'' which means 'water' or 'lake'. The name of the river is derived from Old Norse word ''bersi'' which means 'bear' thus the river name means 'Bear river'. Besseggen
Besseggen or Besseggi is a mountain ridge in Vågå Municipality in Innlandet county, Norway. The tall mountain ridge is located in the Jotunheimen mountains within Jotunheimen National Park. The mountain sits about southwest of the village of Vågåmo and about northwest of the village of Beitostølen. The mountain ridge is surrounded by several other notable mountains including Veslfjellet to the east and Besshø to the northwest. The ridge runs between the lakes Gjende and Bessvatnet. The walk over Besseggen is one of the most popular mountain hikes in Norway. About 30,000 people walk this trip each year. The route over Besseggen starts at Gjendesheim, up to the trails highest point, Veslfjellet (at ), down Besseggen, further over the relatively flat area Bandet (at the foot of Besshø), and ends at Memurubu, where one may take the regularly scheduled ferry route back to Gjendesheim. Besshø
Besshø or Besshøe is a mountain in Vågå Municipality in Innlandet county, Norway. The tall mountain is located in the Jotunheimen mountains within Jotunheimen National Park. The mountain sits about southwest of the village of Vågåmo and about northwest of the village of Beitostølen. The mountain is surrounded by several other notable mountains including Kollhøin to the north, Veslfjellet and Besseggen to the southeast, Bukkehåmåren and Eggi to the south, and Gloptinden to the west. The mountain lies right above the lake Bessvatnet, along the Besseggen hiking trail. On the mountain's north-eastern side is a small cirque glacier, and it is surrounded by a large ice-cored moraine, a relatively rare feature in Norway. Gjende
Gjende or Gjendin is a lake in Vågå Municipality in Innlandet county, Norway. It is located in the Jotunheimen mountain range and also inside Jotunheimen National Park. The proglacial lake shows typical characteristics of glacial formation, being long and narrow, with steep walls. The lake is in length and only in width at the broadest point. Gjende has a characteristic light-green color resulting from the large quantity of rock flour which is discharged into the Gjende by the Muru (Lom), Muru river. The river Sjoa provides the outlet from Gjende at Gjendesheim, and flows eastward into the Gudbrandsdalslågen river. Gjende lies in the middle of Jotunheimen National Park and both to the north and south of the lake lie peaks with elevations reaching greater than . Vågå () is a List of municipalities of Norway, municipality in Innlandet county, Norway. It is located in the Traditional districts of Norway, traditional district of Gudbrandsdal. Innlandet is a Counties of Norway, county in Norway. It was created on 1 January 2020 with the merger of the old counties of Oppland and Hedmark (Jevnaker Municipality and Lunner Municipality were transferred to the neighboring county of Viken (Norwegian county), Viken on the same date). The new county has an area of , making it the largest county in Norway after the division of the old Troms og Finnmark county in 2024. Jotunheimen
Jotunheimen (; "the home of the Jötunn") is a mountainous area of roughly in southern Norway and is part of the long range known as the Scandinavian Mountains. The 29 highest mountains in Norway are all located in the Jotunheimen mountains, including the tall mountain Galdhøpiggen (the highest point in Norway and Northern Europe). Jotunheimen National Park (, ) is a national park in Norway, recognized as one of the country's premier hiking and fishing regions. The national park covers and is part of the larger area Jotunheimen. More than 250 peaks rise above an elevation of , including Northern Europe's three highest peaks: Galdhøpiggen at , Glittertind at and Store Skagastølstind at .
