Bertram Lebhar Jr.
Bertram Lebhar Jr. (1907–1972) was an American bridge player, sportscaster, and radio executive who won the Spingold in 1940 and the Chicago Mixed Board-a-Match in 1946. Lebhar, who used the name Bert Lee on-air, was the radio play-by-play announcer for the New York Rangers from 1939 to 1954. Early life Lebhar was born in New York City to magazine editor Bertam Lebhar Sr. and his wife Rose. In 1923 he was awarded a state scholarship to Cornell University. After graduating from Cornell, Lebhar attended New York University Law School, but chose to pass on a legal career in favor of going to radio advertising sales. Bridge In 1936, Lebhar and Sam Katz finished third in the Wernher Open Pairs national bridge championship. In 1939, the Blue Ribbon Team of Lebhar, Katz, Oscar Brotman, and Louis Newman made it to the semifinals of the Vanderbilt Trophy tournament, losing to a team led by the trophy's donor, Harold Stirling Vanderbilt. Spingold
The Spingold national bridge championship is held at the summer American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) North American Bridge Championship (NABC). The Spingold is a knock-out team event that attracts the top contract bridge players in the world. The event typically lasts seven days with each day being a round consisting of four sessions of 16 boards. The event is open and seeded. History The Spingold Master Knockout Teams, first known as the Challenge Knockout Teams, was contested for the Asbury Park Trophy in the early days. The runner-up team in the regularly scheduled portion of the event had the right to challenge the winners to a playoff. This right was never utilized. Lake Park is a town in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. Lake Park is part of the Miami metropolitan area of South Florida. The population was 9,047 at the 2020 US census. WPOM (1600 kHz) is a AM radio station broadcasting ethnic programming. Licensed to Riviera Beach, Florida, United States, the station serves the West Palm Beach area. The station is currently owned by Carline Clerge, through licensee Caribbean Media Group, Inc. History The station went on the air as WHEW on August 17, 1959. In 1969, the station changed its call letters to WXVI; by 1970, the station had a middle-of-the-road format. In 1971, the station became WPOM, with a contemporary format. In the intervening years, WPOM would adopt several other formats, including all-news in the late 1970s, disco music in the early 1980s, and a split format of gospel and blues by 1999.
