Fort Erie is a town in the Regional Municipality of Niagara, Niagara Region of Ontario, Canada. Bertie Correctional Institution is a state men's prison in Windsor, North Carolina, first opened in August 2006, and operated by the North Carolina Department of Public Safety. As one of the state's four largest prisons, the official capacity is 1,400 prisoners, all held in Close Custody. The site is near the Cashie River. As of March 2012 Bertie was one of six state prisons put on lockdown to squelch gang fights and coordinated gang activity. In May 2015 an excessive-force lawsuit brought by a Bertie inmate, Sammy Ussery, reached the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Bertie Memorial Hospital is a critical access hospital located in Windsor, North Carolina, Windsor, North Carolina. It is a part of ECU Health. The original hospital opened in 1952 with Hill-Burton Act funding. It is a three-story, masonry, International Style (architecture), International Style building with a flat roof. It closed temporarily in 1985 and underwent several turnovers in management. Vidant Health (renamed ECU Health in 2022) took over management in 1998 and provided money for a new hospital in September 2001. The hospital was the first in the nation constructed according to Critical Access Hospital standards. The federal Office of Rural Health Policy has designated it a national model for Critical Access Hospital construction. The hospital concentrates on same-day services.
