Bernier Island
Bernier Island is one of three islands that comprise the ''Bernier and Dorre Island Nature Reserve'' in the Shark Bay World Heritage area in Western Australia. The island and the neighbouring Dorre Island were locations for a lock hospital in the early 1900s. Geography It is located at the north-western corner of the World Heritage area, almost due west of Carnarvon, Western Australia. The Koks Island is offshore from the lighthouse at its northern end. The Gascoyne region is one of the nine regions of Western Australia. It is located in the northwest of Western Australia, and consists of the local government areas of Carnarvon, Exmouth, Shark Bay and Upper Gascoyne. Bernier And Dorre Island Lock Hospital
The Bernier and Dorre Island lock hospitals were two lock hospitals set up on Bernier Island, Bernier and Dorre Islands from 1908 to 1919. Only Aboriginal Australians, Aboriginal people suspected of having a venereal disease were incarcerated. The conditions inmates were put under was inhumane and resulted in more than 40% not returning to their homelands. History From 1908 to 1919, the Western Australian government created lock hospitals on Bernier Island, Bernier and Dorre Islands, in order to forcibly incarcerate Aboriginal people suspected of having a venereal disease. Specifically, Aboriginal people suspected of being infected with syphilis were incarcerated. However it is known that many cases had been misdiagnoses. Aboriginal men were kept on Bernier island and women and children on Dorre. Carnarvon, Western Australia
Carnarvon ( ) is a coastal town situated approximately north of Perth, in Western Australia. It lies at the mouth of the Gascoyne River on the Indian Ocean. The Shark Bay World Heritage Site, world heritage area lies to the south of the town and the Ningaloo Reef and the tourist town of Exmouth, Western Australia, Exmouth lie to the north. Lagostrophus Fasciatus
The banded hare-wallaby, mernine, or munning (''Lagostrophus fasciatus'') is a marsupial currently found on the islands of Bernier and Dorre off western Australia. Reintroduced populations have recently been established on islands and fenced mainland sites, including Faure Island and Wadderin Sanctuary near Narembeen in the central wheatbelt. Taxonomy The description of the species was published in the 1807 report of a French expedition to Australia. The authors, zoologist François Péron and illustrator Charles Lesueur, described a specimen collected at Bernier Island during their visit to the region in 1801, naming the new species as ''Kangurus fasciatus''. Pseudomys Fieldi
Gould's mouse (''Pseudomys gouldii''), also known as the Shark Bay mouse and djoongari in the Pintupi and Luritja languages, is a species of rodent in the murid family. Once ranging throughout Australia from Western Australia to New South Wales, its range has since been reduced to five islands off the coast of Western Australia. Taxonomy In 2021, a comprehensive genetic analysis of native Australian rodents found the djoongari or Shark Bay mouse (''P. fieldi''), which survives on several islands off the coast of Western Australia, to be conspecific with the Gould's mouse. This would make the Gould's mouse, formerly thought extinct, extant once again, albeit only surviving on several islands, a fraction of its former range. Lock Hospital
A lock hospital was an establishment that specialised in treating venereal disease, sexually transmitted diseases. They operated in Britain and its colonies and territories from the 18th century to the 20th. History The military had a close association with a number of the hospitals. By the mid-19th century most of the larger army bases in India were home to a lock hospital. There were more military than civil lock hospitals in India, due to the prevalence of venereal diseases amongst British troops. In 1858 the British Admiralty, Admiralty paid to have one opened in Portsmouth and in 1863 another in Plymouth. The earliest lock hospitals in India were established around 1797 at Berhampur, Kanpur, Danapur, and Fatehgarh. They were usually within bazaars, surrounded by a mud wall and staffed by a doctor and a female nurse. Alannah Joan Geraldine Cecilia MacTiernan (born 10 January 1953) is a former Australian politician. From 1988 to 2023, she has served in politics at a federal, state, and local level, including as a minister in the Western Australian state governments of Geoff Gallop, Alan Carpenter, and Mark McGowan. She is best known for her role as the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure (Western Australia), minister for planning and infrastructure during the construction of the Mandurah line.
