Bernice Agar
Bernice Agar (09 April 1885–1976) was a leading Australian portrait, fashion and society photographer in the late 1910s until the 1930s. Early life and education Bernice Isabel Agar was born on 9 April 1885 in Bowen, Queensland, to Isabella (née Henderson) and Alexander William Agar. She began her career training as a photographer at the Bain Photographic studios in Toowoomba, Queensland. Career By 1917 Agar was already established as a prominent photographer. The Darling Downs Gazette covered an exhibition that was held of her work at the Bain Studios in Brisbane, and said, "It is doubtful if in Australia there is anything to come up to Miss Agar's work". In 1918 Agar established the Bernice Agar Studio in Sydney. Darling Downs Gazette
The ''Darling Downs Gazette'' was a newspaper published from 1848 to 1922 in Drayton and Toowoomba in Queensland, Australia. History ''The Darling Downs Gazette and General Advertiser'' was founded in 1858 by Arthur Sidney Lyon. The first issue of four pages was published on Thursday 10 June 1858 from ''Willow Cottage'', a wooden shanty, in Drayton. After two years, it was purchased by W. H. Byers. Later, William Henry Traill was the proprietor for a brief period. While Drayton, being established in 1842, was the first substantial settlement on the Darling Downs, by the 1860s it was clear that it would be overtaken by nearby Toowoomba in size and importance, leading to Byers relocating the Darling Downs Gazette to Toowoomba in 1861. As the Darling Downs was a rural district occupied by squatters, the newspaper focussed on farming and trade issues. ''The Sun'' was an Australian afternoon tabloid newspaper, first published in Sydney under that name in 1910. History ''The Sunday Sun'' was first published on 5 April 1903. In 1910 Hugh Denison founded Sun Newspaper Ltd (later Sun Newspapers Ltd) and took over publication of the old and ailing ''Australian Star'' and its sister ''Sunday Sun'', appointing Monty Grover as editor-in-chief. The ''Star'' became ''The Sun'', and the ''Sunday Sun'' became ''The Sun: Sunday edition'' on 11 December 1910. Thea Proctor
Alethea Mary Proctor (2 October 1879 – 29 July 1966) was an Australian painter, print maker, designer and teacher who upheld the ideas of 'taste' and 'style'. Biography Proctor was born in Armidale, New South Wales, to William Consett Proctor who was a solicitor and a politician and Kathleen Jane Louisa Proctor (née Roberts). When her parents separated in 1892, she and her mother moved to Bowral to stay with her grandmother who encouraged her interest in painting. Proctor studied at the Sydney Art School from 1896 under Julian Ashton, then at the St John's Wood School of Art in London in 1903. Ashton and Lambert became lifelong friends and she modelled for him many times. Clara Butt
Dame Clara Ellen Butt (1 February 1872 – 23 January 1936) was an English dramatic contralto and one of the most popular singers from the 1890s through to the 1920s. She had an exceptionally fine contralto voice and an agile singing technique, and impressed contemporary composers such as Saint-Saëns and Elgar; the latter composed his '' Sea Pictures'', Op. 37 with her voice in mind. Her main career was as a recitalist and concert singer. She appeared in only two operatic productions, both of Gluck's '' Orfeo ed Euridice''.
