The Bernardo Houssay Award ( es, Premio Bernardo Houssay, links=no) is a distinction awarded by Argentina's Ministry of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation to honor outstanding work by scientists and researchers. The Ministry selects recipients annually through a jury of prominent scientists. Presented by the President of Argentina, it is one of the country's most prestigious prizes in the field of science and engineering. The award's name is a tribute to the doctor Bernardo Houssay, an Argentine Nobel Prize recipient. The Jorge Sabato Award is named in honor of an Argentine technology pioneer, and confers a significant sum of money in addition to a medal. Bernardo Houssay
Bernardo Alberto Houssay (April 10, 1887 – September 21, 1971) was an Argentine physiologist. Houssay was a co-recipient of the 1947 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for discovering the role played by pituitary hormones in regulating the amount of glucose in animals, sharing the prize with Carl Ferdinand Cori and Gerty Cori. He is the first Argentine Nobel laureate in the sciences. Biography Early life Bernardo Alberto Houssay was born April 10, 1887, in Buenos Aires. His parents Albert and Clara Houssay were immigrants from France. A precocious youngster, he was admitted to the Pharmacy School at the University of Buenos Aires at 14 years of age and subsequently to the Faculty of Medicine of the same university at 17 years old and was there from 1904 to 1910. Juan Pablo Paz (born 1959) is an Argentinian physicist that works in the field of quantum computing. A research scientist currently working at the University of Buenos Aires, he has also worked at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in the United States. Biography Juan Pablo Paz was born in Buenos Aires in 1959. He studied at the University of Buenos Aires, where he got his Master and Ph.D. degrees and then worked as researcher, teacher, and director of the Physics department of his faculty. He has worked as well in the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Between 1984 and 2004 he was married with Silvina Ponce Dawson (who is also a physicist) with whom he had two children.
