Bernard Markey
Bernard Markey (7 November 1935 – 23 July 2003) was an Irish Fine Gael politician who served both as a Teachta Dála (TD) and as a Senator. Markey was first elected to Seanad Éireann on the Labour Panel in 1973 and was re-elected to the Seanad in 1977. He was elected to Dáil Éireann at the 1981 general election for the Louth constituency, and held the seat at the February 1982 general election. A Teachta Dála ( , ; plural ), abbreviated as TD (plural ''TDanna'' in Irish language, Irish, TDs in English), is a member of Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Oireachtas, Oireachtas (the Irish Parliament). It is the equivalent of terms such as Member of parliament, ''Member of Parliament'' (MP) or ''Member of Congress'' used in other countries. 1989 Irish General Election
The 1989 Irish general election was held on Thursday, 15 June, three weeks after the dissolution of the Dáil on 25 May. The 26th Dáil assembled at Leinster House on 29 June. However, a new Taoiseach and a Fianna Fáil-Progressive Democrats government were not appointed until 12 July. The general election took place in 41 parliamentary constituencies throughout Ireland for 166 seats in Dáil Éireann, the lower house of parliament, on the same day as the European Parliament election. Campaign The general election of 1989 was precipitated by the defeat of the minority Fianna Fáil government in a private members motion regarding the provision of funds for AIDS sufferers (haemophiliacs who had been infected with contaminated blood products by the HSE). Independent Politician (Ireland)
Independent politicians contest elections without the support of a political party. They have played a continuous role in the politics of the Republic of Ireland since its independence in 1922. Provision for independents in electoral law If a candidate is not the candidate of a registered political party, they may be nominated for elections to Dáil Éireann with the assent of 30 electors in the constituency, for elections to the European Parliament with the assent of 60 electors in the constituency, and for local elections with the assent of 15 electors in the local electoral area. They may choose to have the designation non-party next to their name on the ballot paper.
