Bernard Kabanda
Bernard Kabanda Sslongo (1959 – 4 September 1999) was an Ugandan guitarist. He had just realised fame in the world music circuit through his appearances at WOMAD in the US and the UK in 1999 before he died of AIDS less than two months after his performance at Womad's Reading festival, aged only 40. Before he died, he recorded an album with Womad, called ''Olugendo''. He was discovered in the streets of Kampala Kampala (, ) is the Capital city, capital and largest city of Uganda. Kampala (, ) is the Capital city, capital and largest city of Uganda. In Africa, Uganda is now ranked the 3rd when it comes to music, comedy, nightlife and entertainment at large. Ugandan musicians have embraced digital music platforms such as Spotify, iTunes and DJ Erycom - a local music promotion platform. The music of Uganda is broad and diverse, ranging from traditional indigenous music to Ugandan versions of many contemporary genres. Real World Records is a British record label specializing in world music. It was founded in 1989 by English musician Peter Gabriel and original members of WOMAD. A majority of the works released on Real World Records feature music recorded at Real World Studios, in Box, Wiltshire, England. History The goal of its founding in 1989 was to give talented musicians from around the world access to state-of-the-art recording facilities and audiences beyond their geographic region. The musical relationships formed at WOMAD festivals were also intended to lead to new music recordings. WOMAD ( ; World of Music, Arts and Dance) is an international arts festival. The central aim of WOMAD is to celebrate the world's many forms of music, arts and dance. History WOMAD was founded in 1980 by English rock musician Peter Gabriel, with Thomas Brooman, Bob Hooton, Mark Kidel, Stephen Pritchard, Martin Elbourne and Jonathan Arthur. WOMAD Charlton Park or WOMAD UK is the name given to the World of Music Arts and Dance (WOMAD) festival held in Charlton Park near Malmesbury, Wiltshire, England, since 2007. It is the direct successor to WOMAD Reading, which was held in the town of Reading each year from 1990 to 2006, and previous WOMADs elsewhere in England since 1986. The WOMAD festival is held on the last weekend of July, and currently lasts three and a half days, stretching from the Thursday evening to early Monday morning. The line-up is predominantly World music, but blues, jazz, hip hop, electronic and rock artists also appear.
