Bernard Crouch
Bernard Crouch (1925 – 2 December 1955), was a male international table tennis and tennis player from England. Table tennis career Crouch won a bronze medal at the 1950 World Table Tennis Championships in the Swaythling Cup (men's team) event with Richard Bergmann, Johnny Leach, Aubrey Simons and Harry Venner for England. He won the Wilmott Cup for the Staines League in 1954/55 and was also on the Middlesex County Championships winning side in 1947–48 and 1949–50 to 1955. Tennis career Crouch was an excellent tennis player and a regular member of the Surrey County side. He was a finalist at the Middlesex Championships in 1948. He also played at Wimbledon on several occasions from 1950 to 1954. Death Crouch died in the 1955 Barnes railway accident. Barnes () is a district in South West London, England, part of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. It takes up the extreme north-east of the borough, and as such is the closest part of the borough to central London. It is centred west south-west of Charing Cross in a bend of the River Thames. Its built environment includes a wide variety of convenience and arts shopping on its high street and a high proportion of 18th- and 19th-century buildings in the streets near Barnes Pond. Barnes Rail Crash
The Barnes rail crash, in which 13 people were killed and 41 were injured, occurred at Barnes railway station late in the evening of Friday 2 December 1955. Events The Southern Region of British Railways 23:12 electric passenger train travelling from London Waterloo to Windsor & Eton Riverside and collided with the rear of a LMS class 8 2-8-0 hauled freight train from to Brent at about 35 mph. The wreckage from the passenger train short-circuited the third rail; electrical arcing started a fire in the wooden coach frames, and the leading coach of the passenger train was burnt out. The coaches were classified as 2-NOL and were converted in the 1930s from old London & South Western Railway steam carriages. Causes Signalling The accident was caused by irregular operation of the block apparatus by the signalman at Barnes Junction. The Middlesex Championships. or Middlesex Lawn Tennis Championships and also known as the Middlesex Open Tennis Championships was a men's and women's grass court tennis founded at the Chiswick Park Lawn Tennis Club,Chiswick, Chiswick Park, Chiswick, Middlesex, Great Britain in 1884 and known as the Chiswick Park Club Open Lawn Tennis Tournament during the early editions of the event.
