Bernalillo Public Schools
Bernalillo Public Schools is a school district with its headquarter in Bernalillo, New Mexico. History As of 1970, Hispanic and Latino people are the majority ethnic group in the area. Prior to 1969 the school board had five members. To encourage elections of members of non-Hispanic groups, in 1969 the number of board members increased to seven. The two new board members included an American Indian and a non-Hispanic white person. Bernalillo High School alumnus Matthew Montaño became the superintendent in 2021. Bernalillo () is a town in and the county seat of Sandoval County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 8,977 at the 2020 census. Bernalillo is part of the Albuquerque metropolitan area. History Wine Festival In the 1620s, the wine grape was introduced to Bernalillo by the Catholic priests and Spaniards. The wine industry grew rapidly since. Families were making their own wine and the vineyards were flourishing. The market dipped due to drought and floods. Slowly over time, the wine industry came back into Bernalillo and has sustained its health today, becoming a tradition and staple within the town itself. The town has embraced its wine heritage and hosts the New Mexico Wine festival yearly during each Labor Day. The event brings in people from all of New Mexico as well as tourists. Santa Ana Pueblo ( Eastern Keres: Tamaya ʰɑmɑjːɑ is a settlement in Sandoval County, New Mexico, United States, of Native Americans who speak an eastern dialect of the Keresan languages. For statistical purposes, the United States Census Bureau has defined this community as a census-designated place (CDP). As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 479. It is part of the Albuquerque metropolitan area. The Pueblo, named Tamaya in Keres, administers a total reservation land of 73,000 acres (295 km2) in the Rio Grande valley. The pueblo celebrates an annual feast day for its patron saint, St. Anne, on July 26. Placitas is a census-designated place (CDP) in Sandoval County, New Mexico, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 4,977. It is part of the Albuquerque Metropolitan Statistical Area. History In 1767, 21 families received a land grant from Spain. They founded the village of San Jose de las Huertas near present-day Placitas. Around the year 1768, nomadic Native Americans raided the village. In the 1830s, Placitas, which at the time was known as Las Placitas, was settled. On February 24, 1894, Las Placitas Presbyterian Church was founded. During the 1960s and 1970s, there were many hippie settlements near Placitas. These settlements include Sun Farm, Lower Farm, Little Farm, Dome Valley, and Tawapa.
