Bernadett Baczkó
Bernadett Baczkó (born 8 January 1986 in Budapest) is a Hungarian people, Hungarian judoka, who played for the lightweight category. She is a nine-time national champion, and a five-time medalist at the European Junior Championships. She also won the bronze medal for the same division at the 2007 World Judo Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Baczko represented Hungary at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, where she competed for the Judo at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Women's 57 kg, women's lightweight class (57 kg). She reached only into the second preliminary round, where she lost by a waza-ari (half-point) to Hungarian-born Australian judoka and five-time Olympian Mária Pekli. Because her opponent advanced further into the semi-finals, Baczko offered another shot for the bronze medal by defeating Tunisia's Nesria Jelassi, with an automatic ippon and kuzure kesa gatame (seven mat holds), in the repechage bout. Ippon
is the highest score a fighter can achieve in a Japanese martial arts ''ippon-wazari'' contest, usually kendo, judo, karate or jujitsu. Mária Pekli
Maria Pekli (born 12 June 1972 in Baja, Hungary) is an Australian judoka of Hungarian descent. She was Australian Champion in the 57 kg division for seven consecutive years, between 1997 and 2003. She won a bronze medal in the lightweight (57 kg) division at the 2000 Summer Olympics, the first Australian woman to win an official Olympic Judo medal (although Suzanne Williams won a medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics when Women's Judo was a demonstration sport). Along with Cuba's Driulys González and Japan's Ryoko Tamura-Tani, Pekli became in 2008 the first female judoka to compete at five Olympics. The only other judokas to compete at five Olympics are Belgian Robert Van de Walle and Puerto Rican judoka-bobsledder Jorge Bonnet. Waza-ari
is the second highest score a fighter can achieve in a Japanese martial arts ''ippon'' or ''waza-ari'' contest, usually judo, karate, or jujutsu. ''Waza-ari'' in judo A ''waza-ari'' is the second highest score a fighter can achieve in judo, the others formerly being a ''yuko (judo), yuko'' (advantage) and a ''koka''. An ''ippon'' would be the highest score that, once awarded, ends the match in favor of the athlete who scored it. The referee raises his arm laterally parallel to the ground to award ''waza-ari''. Its value is higher than any other sum or combination of lower scores. No matter how many ''yuko'' or ''koka'', when time runs out, a ''waza-ari'' still counts more. Judo At The 2008 Summer Olympics – Women's 57 Kg
The women's 57 kg (also known as ''lightweight'') tournament in the judo at the 2008 Summer Olympics was held on August 11 at the Beijing Science and Technology University Gymnasium. A total of 22 women competed in this event, limited to jūdōka with a body weight of less than 57 kilograms. Preliminary rounds started at 12:00 Noon China Standard Time, CST. Repechage finals, semifinals, bouts for bronze medals and the final were held at 18:00pm CST. This event was the third-lightest of the women's judo weight classes, limiting competitors to a maximum of 57 kilograms of body mass. Like all other judo events, bouts lasted five minutes. If the bout was still tied at the end, it was extended for another five-minute, sudden-death period; if neither judoka scored during that period, the match is decided by the judges.
