Francesco Berlinghieri
Francesco Berlinghieri (1440–1501) was an Italian scholar and humanist who lived during the fifteenth century. He promoted the value of classical Greek learning and was one of the first to print a text based on Ptolemy's ''Geographica''. Berlinghieri studied poetry under the tutelage of Cristoforo Landino. Career Berlinghieri was born in Florence into a family with over 200 years of involvement in Florentine politics. He served in a variety of governmental offices including as Prior of the Signoria and Conservator of Laws. In 1479 he was appointed Florentine ambassador at the Gonzaga court in Mantua¹. He later found employment in Florence in the court of Lorenzo de' Medici and took part in the Platonic Academy, founded by Marsilio Ficino. Berlinghieri provided financial support to Ficino during the latter's translation of Plato's works into Latin. In 1464 Berlinghieri started to work on a treatise based upon Ptolemy's ''Geographica''. Bonaventura Berlinghieri
Bonaventura Berlinghieri (fl. 1228–1274) was an Italian painter from Lucca, Italy, of the Gothic period. He was son of painter Berlinghiero Berlinghieri and brother of Barone and Marco Berlinghieri. Bonaventura painted several panels and wall-paintings at Lucca, in 1235 and 1244. He is most famous for an altarpiece dedicated to the life of Francis of Assisi. This altarpiece is painted in tempera on wood panel in the Italo-Byzantine or ''maniera greca'' style. It depicts the stigmata as well as several scenes from the saint's life. Berlinghiero also known as Berlinghiero Berlinghieri or Berlinghiero of Lucca (fl. 1228 – between 1236 and 1242), was an Italian painter in the Italo-Byzantine style of the early thirteenth century. He was the father of the painters Barone Berlinghieri, Bonaventura Berlinghieri, and Marco Berlinghieri. His actual name is unknown, as he is known from the inscription "Berlingerius me pinxit" on the crucifix which is the basis of attributing other works to the name. The form "Berlinghiero Berlinghieri", once common in art history, is certainly not his name according to Edward B. Garrison and most recent sources and he should be called Berlinghiero. He is also mentioned in a parchment of March 22, 1228 among the names of the residents of Lucca who swore to keep the peace with Pisa after a five-year war.
