Berlin Goddess
The Berlin Goddess, or Berlin Kore is an Kore (sculpture), Archaic Greek Kouros, kore made in 570 B.C. discovered in the city of Keratea, which was a part of Attica, Greece. Discovered in 1923 in a complete state, it has since then placed on display at the Antikensammlung Berlin. It is considered another major example of ancient Greek sculpture that maintains much of its Polychrome, polychromy, with traces of its original red, yellow, and blue pigments present. Discovery The kore was discovered approximately 1923, in the town of Olympos, part of present day Keratea. It was allegedly covered with lead when it was found in situ. Subsequently, it entered the art market, where it was held by archaeologist Theodor Wiegand. Marble
Marble is a metamorphic rock consisting of carbonate minerals (most commonly calcite (CaCO3) or Dolomite (mineral), dolomite (CaMg(CO3)2) that have recrystallized under the influence of heat and pressure. It has a crystalline texture, and is typically not Foliation (geology), foliated (Layered intrusion, layered), although there are exceptions. In geology, the term ''marble'' refers to metamorphosed limestone, but its use in stonemasonry more broadly encompasses unmetamorphosed limestone. The extraction of marble is performed by quarrying. Polos
The ''polos'' crown (plural ''poloi''; ) is a high cylindrical Crown (headgear), crown worn by mythological goddesses of the Ancient Near East and Anatolia and adopted by the ancient Greeks for imaging the mother goddesses Rhea (mythology), Rhea, Cybele and Hera. The word also meant an axis or pivot and is cognate with the English, 'pole'. It was often open at the top with hair cascading down from the sides, or it could be reduced to a ring. In the classical period, mortal women seem not to have worn poloi, but they are more commonly seen in terracotta statues of women from the Mycenaean period, thus the use in statues of goddesses can be seen as a deliberate archaism.
