Berlin-Alt-Treptow
Alt-Treptow (, literally ''Old Treptow'') is a German locality in the borough of Treptow-Köpenick in Berlin. Known also as Treptow it was, until 2001, the main and the eponymous locality of the former Treptow borough. History The locality, first inhabited in 6th century by Slavic peoples, was first mentioned in 1568 with the name of ''Trebow''. It merged into Berlin with the Greater Berlin Act in 1920. From 1961 to 1989 its north and western borders were crossed by the Berlin Wall. From January 1, 2001 the former borough of Treptow, composed also by Plänterwald, Baumschulenweg, Niederschöneweide, Johannisthal, Adlershof, Altglienicke and Bohnsdorf; was disestablished to merge into the new Treptow-Köpenick borough. Treptowers
The Treptowers is a complex of buildings with a distinctive high-rise in the Alt-Treptow district of Berlin, Germany. Completed in 1998, the complex is located on the river Spree. The name "Treptowers" is a portmanteau word from Treptow and the English word "tower". Genesis and architecture The Treptowers complex consists of four buildings and is the result of an architectural competition held in 1993 and won by the architect Gerhard Spangenberg. The detailed planning and building was carried out by a partnership of architects Schweger and Reichel + Stauth from Brunswick. Roland Ernst joined Urban GmbH & Co. as project developer and overseer of construction. The final construction cost totalled 190 million Deutsche Marks. The buildings were constructed on the site of a former electrical appliance factory complex, which was built in 1926 by AEG. Treptower Park
Treptower Park (, with a silent ''w'') is a park alongside the river Spree (river), Spree in Alt-Treptow, in the district of Treptow-Köpenick, south of central Berlin. History It was the location of the Great Industrial Exposition of Berlin in 1896. It is a popular place for recreation of Berliners and a tourist attraction. On 14 July 1987 it was used by British band Barclay James Harvest for the first ever open-air concert by a western rock band in the German Democratic Republic. Berlin S-Bahn
The Berlin S-Bahn () is a rapid transit railway system that services the reigon in and around Berlin, the capital city of Germany. It has been in operation under the name since December 1930, having been previously called the special tariff area ('Berlin city, orbital, and suburban railways'). It complements the Berlin U-Bahn and is the link to many outer-Berlin areas, such as Berlin Brandenburg Airport. As such, the Berlin S-Bahn blends elements of a commuter rail service and a rapid transit system. Spree (river)
The Spree ( , ; , , ; ; ; in Lower Sorbian also called ''Rěka'') is a river in Germany and the Czech Republic. With a length of approximately , it is the main tributary of the Havel River. The Spree is much longer than the Havel, which it flows into at Berlin-Spandau; the Havel then flows into the Elbe at Havelberg. Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg () is the second Boroughs of Berlin, borough of Berlin, formed in 2001 by merging the former East Berlin borough of Friedrichshain and the former West Berlin borough of Kreuzberg. The historic Oberbaum Bridge, formerly a Berlin border crossings, Berlin border crossing for pedestrians, links both districts across the river Spree (river), Spree as the new borough's landmark (as featured in the coat of arms). Kreuzberg
Kreuzberg () is a district of Berlin, Germany. It is part of the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg borough located south of Berlin-Mitte, Mitte. During the Cold War era, it was one of the poorest areas of West Berlin, but since German reunification in 1990, it has undergone significant gentrification and is now known for its vibrant arts scene. The borough is known for its large percentage of immigrants and descendants of immigrants, many of whom are of Turks in Germany, Turkish ancestry.
