Berdine Grünewald
Berdine Grünewald (born Anne Berdine Grünewald, 15 August 1914 – 7 August 1994) was a South African actress. Career Grünewald made her career break in 1935 with the role of Esther, originally played by Elsa Fouché, in ''Oom Paul'', presented by Hendrik and Mathilde Hanekom's touring company. She stayed with the Hanekoms for a number of years before joining André Huguenet for ''Die Kwaksalwer'' in 1939. She also appeared at the Volksteater and with the National Theatre Organisation. She played opposite Huguenet as Ophelia in his Afrikaans-language version of ''Hamlet'' in 1947 and as Lady Macduff in ''Macbeth'' in 1950. She toured Australia in 1951 with the British Commonwealth Theatre Company. Her last stage performance in South Africa was in ''Die Dame met die Kamelias'' in 1966. Robert Ardrey
Robert Ardrey (October 16, 1908 – January 14, 1980) was an American playwright, screenwriter and science writing, science writer perhaps best known for ''The Territorial Imperative'' (1966). After a Broadway (theatre), Broadway and Cinema of the United States, Hollywood career, he returned to his academic training in anthropology in the 1950s. As a playwright and screenwriter Ardrey received many accolades. He was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1937, won the inaugural Sidney Howard Memorial Award in 1940, and in 1966 received an Academy Awards, Academy Award nomination for best screenplay for his script for Khartoum (film), ''Khartoum''. His most famous play is Thunder Rock (play), ''Thunder Rock''. Ardrey's science writing challenged models in the social sciences of his time. ''Cry, the Beloved Country'' is a 1951 British drama film directed by Zoltán Korda and starring Sidney Poitier, Charles Carson and Canada Lee, in his last film role. The film is based on the novel of the same name written by Alan Paton. Plot From the back country of South Africa, black minister Stephen Kumalo journeys to Johannesburg to help his sister, who has been reported to be ill, and to search for his son, who left home and has not kept in contact. He is also asked to visit the daughter of someone who has not heard from her for some time. With the help of fellow minister Reverend Msimangu, Kumalo discovers that his sister, a prostitute with a young son, left home to find her husband but failed to find him and has been incarcerated in prison. He discovers that his son has impregnated a young girl and is a thief and murderer. Both live in a poverty-stricken urban community.
