Bennie Adkins
Bennie Gene Adkins (February 1, 1934 – April 17, 2020) was a United States Army soldier and recipient of the United States Armed Forces, U.S. military's highest decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his actions during the Vietnam War. In March 1966 Adkins distinguished himself during a 38-hour close-combat battle against North Vietnamese Army forces during the Battle of A Shau. At the time of the cited action, Adkins was a sergeant first class serving as an Intelligence Sergeant with Detachment A-102, 5th Special Forces Group, 1st Special Forces. Biography Adkins was born in Waurika, Oklahoma, and was drafted in 1956. Waurika, Oklahoma
Waurika is the county seat of Jefferson County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,837 as of the 2020 United States census. An article from 1985 in ''The Oklahoman'' claimed that Waurika promoted itself as "The Parakeet Capital of the World," while giving no explanation for using this slogan. The Waurika Chamber of Commerce website in 2020 echoed that the town was "once a parakeet paradise," but currently seems to be promoting the motto ''On The Trail, By The Lake'', complete with a logo of a cowboy bronc-riding a fish. Fort Sherman
Fort Sherman is a former United States Army base in Panama, located on Toro Point at the Caribbean (northern) end of the Panama Canal, on the western bank of the Canal directly opposite Colón, Panama, Colón (which is on the eastern bank). The United States Army Sergeants Major Academy (USASMA) was established on 1 July 1972 at Fort Bliss, Texas, and began instruction in January, 1973. Its curriculum is designed to broaden the student's current knowledge base.
