Benmore, Utah
Benmore is a ghost town in Tooele County, Utah, Tooele County, in the U.S. state of Utah. History The area was first settled area in 1863. Later, in 1873 the area was known as Petersburg, after Peter Jorgensen, a homesteader in the area. In 1895, a local resident, Israel Bennion recommended the settlers move closer to Harker Creek. His recommendation was met with rebuttals, but Bennion moved to the new area despite this. In August 1911, it was found that the Vernon area needed another school, and eventually, the decision was made to build one at the Bennion settlement and, in 1914, the school opened. A post office was established in 1915 and remained in operation until 1935. In 1914 the Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints organized a branch in the area. A house of worship was set to be constructed but was never completed. The church was the entity that wanted to change the name of the village. Benmore Valley AVA
Benmore Valley is an American Viticultural Area located in southwestern Lake County, California. The valley is named for Benjamin Moore, a local 19th century cattle rustler. The valley is a high depression in the mountains of southwestern Lake County, and is much cooler than surrounding areas. The TTB filing in 1991 mentioned 125 acres of Chardonnay. Most of the grapes last produced there were used by Geyser Peak Winery. As of February 2018, there are no wineries or planted vineyards left in the AVA, which is no longer marketed by Lake County winegrape growers. Benmore Botanic Garden
Benmore Botanic Garden (formerly known as the Younger Botanic Garden) is a large botanical garden situated in Strath Eachaig at the foot of Beinn Mhòr, on the Cowal Peninsula, in Argyll and Bute, west of Scotland. The gardens are on the west side of the A815 road from Dunoon, between the Holy Loch and Loch Eck, and include footbridges across the River Eachaig. It is one of the sites of Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. Features include an avenue of giant sequoias planted in 1863, large square walled gardens, a waterfall, a fernery, ponds and walks up the hillside to viewpoints over the Holy Loch. Benmore Gardens is a suburb of Johannesburg in the Sandton area. It is located in Region 3 and is in a South African region - some 29 mi (or 46 km) South-West of Pretoria, the country's capital city. Benmore Dam
Benmore Dam is the largest dam within the Waitaki power scheme, located in the Canterbury Region of New Zealand's South Island. There are eight other power stations in the Waitaki Power Scheme. The dam is the largest earth-fill (zoned embankment dam) water-retaining structure in New Zealand. Its core is low permeability clay material, supported by two massive shoulders of river gravel. Lake Benmore has a volume of 1.25 billion cubic metres, about 1.5 times as much water as Wellington Harbour. The dam's spillway can cope with over 6,000 cubic metres of water per second, about 20 times the mean river flow. Benmore Peak is the highest point of the Benmore Range, an island range located in the southern half of the Mackenzie Basin, South Island, New Zealand. The 28 km (17½ mile) by Benmore Range is aligned approximately north–south and situated between the small town of Twizel at the northern end and the village of Omarama at the south-western end. The Benmore Range is bordered by Lake Benmore to the south and the Haldon Arm of Lake Benmore to the east. There are more than thirty surveyed peaks above 1,000 m (3,280 ft), with at least twelve of these above 1,500 m (4,920 ft), although only five have official names. Lake Benmore
Lake Benmore is New Zealand's largest artificial lake. Located in the South Island of New Zealand and part of the Waitaki River, it was created in the 1960s by construction of Benmore Dam. Characteristics The lake has an area of about 75 km² and a maximum depth of 90 meters. The lake consists of two arms: the Haldon arm, fed mainly by the Tekapo, Pukaki and Twizel rivers, and the Ōhau Canal; and the Ahuriri Arm, fed mainly by the Ahuriri River. Immediately downstream is Lake Aviemore. As of 2023, Land Air Water Aotearoa described the water quality as "very good", with a trophic level index of 1.8. It also described the quality of ecological conditions as "high", with a lake submerged plant indicators score of 72.0%. Fair Head
Fair Head or Benmore (; The Great Cliff) is a long, high, mountain cliff, close to the sea, at the north-eastern corner of County Antrim, Northern Ireland. The cliff's sheer and vertical high dolerite rock face is shaped into distinctive vertical columns like organ pipes, which formed 60 million years ago when a sill of igneous rock was injected between horizontal Carboniferous sediments. Fair Head is considered one of the best traditional climbing and bouldering locations in the British Isles, and is one of the biggest expanses of climbable rock in Northwest Europe.
