Benjamin Brunson House
The Benjamin Brunson House is one of the oldest houses remaining in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Saint Paul, Minnesota it was built ca. 1856 in the area known as "railroad island," being surrounded by tracks. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Benjamin Wetherill Brunson, Benjamin Brunson was born in 1823 in Detroit, Michigan. His father, the Rev. Alfred Brunson, was an itinerant Methodist preacher who traveled a "circuit district" along the Mississippi River between Rock Island, Illinois to Saint Anthony Falls. The elder Brunson made his permanent residence in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. In 1847, Benjamin Brunson came to the area to assist his brother, Ira B. Brunson, Ira, in making the first plat of the city of Saint Paul. Lake Superior And Mississippi Railroad
The Lake Superior and Mississippi Railroad is the name for two different railroads in Minnesota. Historic railroad The Lake Superior and Mississippi Railroad (LS&M) was the first rail link between the Twin Cities and Duluth and came into existence in 1863 when financier Jay Cooke selected Duluth as the northern end of a new railroad. Lyman Dayton, a local businessman put up $10,000 of his own money to do the original surveying work and served as the railroad's president until his death in 1865. Dayton was succeeded as president by Frank Hamilton Clark, a Philadelphia banker whose family firm gave Cooke his start in the financial industry. The LS&M was completed in 1870, running through the city of Carlton and running along the path of the Saint Louis River to Duluth. Pierre "Pig's Eye" Parrant, or Pierre Parent, was the first person of European descent to live within the borders of what would eventually become the city of Saint Paul, Minnesota. His exploits propelled him to local fame and infamy, with his name briefly adorning the village that would one day become Minnesota's capital city. Fort Snelling
Fort Snelling is a former military fortification and National Historic Landmark in the U.S. state of Minnesota on the bluffs overlooking the confluence of the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers. The military site was initially named Fort Saint Anthony, but it was renamed Fort Snelling once its construction was completed in 1825. Before the American Civil War, the U.S. Army supported slavery at the fort by allowing its soldiers to bring their personal enslaved people. These included African Americans Dred Scott and Harriet Robinson Scott, who lived at the fort in the 1830s.
