Benhall
Benhall is a civil parish in the East Suffolk District, East Suffolk district of Suffolk, England. Lying to the south of Saxmundham, its population at the 2021 census was 569. The main settlement is Benhall Green, while the hamlet of Benhall Street lies towards the west of the parish. History The manor of Benhall was granted in 1086 to Robert de Malet, and has since had a long and complicated history, having been owned by many of the most powerful people of their time, including the De La Poles, the Howards and King Henry VIII. Benhall Lodge The great house of the area is Benhall Lodge. A manor house had existed on the Benhall estate since at least 1225, when it was fortified by Ralph de Sunderland. Long known as Benhall Lodge, the house has been rebuilt by various Lords of the Manor: including in 1638 by Sir Edward Duke, 1st Baronet, Sir Edward Duke, Bt., in 1790 by William Beaumaris Rush, and in 1810 by Edward Hollond. River Alde
The River Alde and River Ore form a river system in Suffolk, England passing by Snape, Suffolk, Snape and Aldeburgh. The River Alde and River Ore meet northwest of Blaxhall. From there downriver the combined river is known as the River Alde past Snape and Aldeburgh, and then again as the River Ore as it approaches Orford, Suffolk, Orford and flows by a Shingle beach, shingle Spit (landform), spit before emptying into the North Sea. Both rivers are named by back-formation from key towns on their route: the Alde is named from Aldeburgh, and the Ore is named from Orford. Benhall Green is a village in Suffolk, England, about south of the town of Saxmundham. The village is the main settlement of Benhall parish, which had a population of 569 at the 2021 census. The main road south from Saxmundham skirted the village to the west and became the A12 road (England), A12 trunk road. The Saxmundham bypass, built in the 1980s, now carries the trunk road a little further from the village. On the south-east edge of the village, a lane crosses the small River Fromus at a Ford (crossing), ford, then immediately enters Sternfield village. For the first tier of local government, Benhall and Sternfield parishes elect members of Benhall & Sternfield Parish Council. Saxmundham ( ) is a market town and civil parish in the East Suffolk district, in the county of Suffolk, England. It is set in the valley of the River Fromus about north-east of Ipswich and west of the coast at Sizewell. The town is bypassed by the main A12 road between London and Lowestoft. The town is served by Saxmundham railway station on the East Suffolk Line between Ipswich and Lowestoft. In 2011 the parish had a population of 3644. Governance The district electoral ward also has the name Saxmundham. Its population at the 2011 census was 4,913. Saxmundham Town Council consisted of eleven councillors.
