''Beneath Medicine Tree'' is the first full-length album from Copeland. ''Beneath Medicine Tree'' features a heavy medical theme. Aaron Marsh admits that the lyrics in this album were inspired by the hospitalization of his girlfriend and the death of his grandmother. The album booklet includes photographs by then-bassist James Likeness of hospital scenes. Marsh cites that, "With ''Beneath Medicine Tree'', I wanted to make a record that moves people, while with ''In Motion'', I wanted to make a record that makes people move." Copeland (band)
Copeland is an American rock band formed in 2001 by the singer, pianist Aaron Marsh (who also plays guitar) with his friend, the bass guitarist and backing vocalist James Likeness, in Lakeland, Florida. History Inception Aaron Marsh and Bryan Laurenson signed a record deal with the independent label The Militia Group in 2002 and released their first album, '' Beneath Medicine Tree'', a year later. In 2004, 2005 and 2006, they performed at the annual Cornerstone Florida Festival in Orlando, Florida. '' In Motion'', Copeland's second full-length album, was released on March 22, 2005. The Militia Group
The Militia Group is an independent record company based in Long Beach, California. History The Militia Group was founded in 1998 by Chad Pearson as a booking agency, booking for artists such as Slick Shoes, Craig's Brother, Dogwood, twothirtyeight, Acceptance, and Element 101. Pearson and Rory Felton partnered in 2000 to turn the booking agency into a record company. Both Pearson and Felton had previous experience with independent labels and artists: Pearson in Seattle, WA working at Tooth & Nail Records, and Felton in Kansas City co-operating Arise Records with Jason Irvine in Louisville, KY. James Likeness
James Likeness is an American graphic designer and musician from Florida, best known as the bass player and back-up vocalist for Copeland. Education Likeness earned an Associate of Arts degree in Visual Art from St. Petersburg College, followed by a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Florida State University. Career Likeness was a founding member of Copeland, an indie rock band formed in 2001. He performed with the band until 2007, and also designed much of the group's cover artwork. After leaving the band in 2007 to pursue a career in graphic design, Likeness went on to become the designer for indie label Drive-Thru Records in Santa Monica, California. During that time, Likeness reconnected with Jamie Tworkowski, founder of To Write Love on Her Arms, and began designing for the non-profit. The album includes a bonus disc of the ''Sony Connect Sessions'' with acoustic versions of "Don't Slow Down," "Pin Your Wings," "Take Care," and "Coffee," the latter two of which are taken from '' Beneath Medicine Tree''.
