Bendyshe Layton
Bendyshe Layton (died 17 January 1918) was a British businessman and member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong The Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, colloquially known as LegCo, is the Unicameralism, unicameral legislature of Hong Kong. It sits under People's Republic of China, China's "one country, two systems" c .... He was with the firm of Gibb, Livingston & Co., one of the leading trading firms in the East during the late nineteenth century. He later started his own business firm, Layton & Co., as a bill and bullion broker. In 1888, he was nominated by the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce to sit temporarily in the Legislative Council during the absence of A. P. MacEwen. He left Hong Kong in around 1913 or 1914 due to his health issue and lived in Britain until his death on 17 January 1918. He had a son named G. B. Gibb, Livingston & Co
Gibb, Livingston & Co., known in Chinese as Jinkee or Renji, was one of the most important and best-known foreign trading firms in China in the late 19th and the first half of the 20th century. Gibb, Livingston & Co. was established on 1July 1836 in Canton (Guangzhou), by two Scotsmen, Thomas Augustus Gibb and William Potter Livingston, who were originally employees of the British East India Company. and moved to Macao during the First Opium War. It opened the first office at Queen's Road, Hong Kong when the island was ceded to the British as a colony. In 1844 John Darby Gibb opened a branch in Shanghai at the Cadastral Lot No. 2. on Jinkee Road (now ) which was named after the firm. The Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce (HKGCC; zh, t=香港總商會) was founded on 29 May 1861, and is the oldest and one of the largest business organizations in Hong Kong. It has around 4,000 corporate members, who combined employ around one-third of Hong Kong's workforce. It is a self-funding, not-for-profit organization that promotes and represents the interests of the Hong Kong business community. A core function of its work is to formulate recommendations on improving the business environment, which its 23 industry-specific committees constantly analyze and make regular submissions to Government of Hong Kong officials and policy makers. Alexander Palmer MacEwen
Alexander Palmer MacEwen (1846–1919) was a British businessman in China and member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong. Biography MacEwen was head of the Holiday, Wise & Co., agent and member on the consulting committee of the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank, Jardine, Matheson & Co. and Union Insurance Society of Canton. He was also vice-chairman of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce. member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong as the representative of the chamber in April 1886 during the absence of Thomas Jackson, and from 1887 after Jackson's retirement until 1890 when left for England. Unofficial Member is the name given to individuals who are members of the Executive Council of Hong Kong and Legislative Council of Hong Kong but who are not members of the Hong Kong Government. The terms "Unofficial" (or "non-official") and "Official" refer to whether the individual holds governmental office; both categories hold full membership of the councils. Before the direct election of Legislative Council members in 1991, the Government reflected the views and opinions of Hong Kong society by appointing members of the business and social elites to the two councils. These members acted as a bridge between local residents and the Government.
