Bend Metropolitan Area
The Bend metropolitan area (formerly the Bend–Prineville, OR Combined Statistical Area and the Bend, OR Metropolitan Statistical Area) is a Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) consisting of Oregon's Crook, Deschutes, and Jefferson counties. In 2023, the Office of Management and Budget combined the former Bend-Prineville Combined Statistical Area (CSA) with adjacent Jefferson County to form the new MSA. Jefferson County is one of the 36 counties in the U.S. state of Oregon. At the 2020 census, the population was 24,502. The county seat is Madras. The county is named after Mount Jefferson, the second tallest mountain in Oregon. History Jefferson County was created on December 12, 1914, from a portion of Crook County. The county owes much of its agricultural prosperity to the railroad, which links Madras with the Columbia River, and was completed in 1911, and to the development of irrigation projects in the late 1930s. The railroad was completed despite constant feuds and battles between two lines working on opposite sides of the Deschutes River. Pilot Butte (Oregon)
Pilot Butte is a cinder cone that was created from an extinct volcano located in Bend, Oregon. It is a cinder cone butte which rises nearly above the surrounding plains. Bend is one of six cities in the United States to have a volcano within its boundaries. The other examples are Mount Tabor in Portland, Oregon, Jackson Volcano in Jackson, Mississippi, Diamond Head in Honolulu, Glassford Hill in Prescott Valley and Pilot Knob in Austin, Texas. The Pilot Butte State Scenic Viewpoint, presented as a gift to the State of Oregon in 1928, is a Bend icon. Pilot Butte itself is a popular hiking destination with two trails to the summit, each gaining about in elevation. There is also a trail around the base of the butte.
