Ben Meier
Ben Meier (August 1, 1918 – October 2, 1995) was a North Dakota Republican Party politician who served as the Secretary of State of North Dakota for a record tenure of 34 years from January 1, 1955, to December 31, 1988. This tenure makes him the second longest serving state level Secretary of State in United States history. Bill Gardner of New Hampshire, who served for 54 years, from 1976 to 2022, surpassed Meier's record on December 9, 2010. Biography Ben Meier was born in Napoleon, North Dakota on August 1, 1918. He was educated in Logan County rural schools, and he received his high school education by correspondence. He attended Dakota Business College, and the School of Banking of the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He worked at banks in Napoleon, Gackle, and Hazelton from 1943 until 1950. Norman Brunsdale
Clarence Norman Brunsdale (July 9, 1891January 27, 1978) was an American politician who served as the 24th Governor of North Dakota and a United States senator from the state of North Dakota. Biography Clarence Norman Brunsdale was born in Sherbrooke, Steele County, North Dakota. he was the son of Knute H. Brunsdale (1855–1899) and Anna Margaret (Nordgaard) Brunsdale (1860–1927), both of whom were of Norwegian immigrant heritage. He was educated in public schools and the Bruflat Academy at Portland, North Dakota. In 1913, he graduated from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. Logan County, North Dakota
Logan County is a county in the U.S. state of North Dakota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 1,876. Its county seat is Napoleon. History The Dakota Territory legislature created the county on January 4, 1873. It was named for John A. Logan (1826-1886), a Civil War general and United States Senator from Illinois. The county government was not organized at that time, but the county was not attached to another county for administrative or judicial purposes. The county government organization was effected on September 1, 1884. The county's boundaries were altered in 1883. They have remained in the present configuration since that time. Napoleon was the county seat from 1884 to 1899. King became the county seat briefly in 1899 before Napoleon once again was given that title. Thomas Hall (June 6, 1869 – December 4, 1958) was a United States Republican politician who served in the United States House of Representatives. He also served as the North Dakota Secretary of State for two different periods, each lasting 12 years. Biography Thomas Hall was born in Cliff Mine, Michigan. The North Dakota Public Service Commission is a constitutional agency that maintains various degrees of statutory authority over utilities, telecommunications, railroads, grain elevators, pipeline safety, and other functions in North Dakota. Established before North Dakota became a state, the Dakota Territory established a Board of Railroad Commissioners in 1885 to oversee railroads, sleeping car, and express companies. With the state's creation in 1889, the board was known as the North Dakota Board of Railroad Commissioners. The commission gained authority over the telephone companies in 1915, and over all public utilities (water, gas, steam heat, and electricity) in 1919.
