Bemis Company, Inc. was a global manufacturer of flexible packaging products (ranging from self-venting cook-in-bag packaging and retort packaging for shelf-stable products, to vacuum packaging for meat products and puncture-resistant, sterile medical packaging) and pressure-sensitive materials. Bemis was headquartered in Neenah, Wisconsin in the United States. Its divisions were located in 12 countries and its films for packaging products and adhesive materials were distributed worldwide. Polly Bemis (September 11, 1853 – November 6, 1933) was a Chinese American American pioneer, pioneer who lived in Idaho in the late 19th and early 20th century. Her story became a biographical novel, and was the subject of the 1991 film ''Thousand Pieces of Gold (film), Thousand Pieces of Gold''. Early life On September 11, 1853, Polly was born in rural northern China, near one of the upper villages. As a child, Polly had footbinding, bound feet, which were later unbound. When she was eighteen, there was a prolonged drought, during which her father sold her to bandits for two much-needed bags of seed. In 1872, Polly was smuggled into the United States and sold as a slave in San Francisco, California, for $2,500. It was common for Chinese men of that time to have multiple wives and concubines, all having some social status and living under the same roof. Shane Bemis (born c. 1972) is an American politician who is the former mayor of Gresham, Oregon, Oregon's fourth-largest city. He was elected mayor in 2006, at the age of 34, becoming the youngest mayor in Gresham's history. Prior to serving as mayor, Bemis served as a city councilor for Gresham for one term between 2003 and 2007. Samuel Flagg Bemis (October 20, 1891 – September 26, 1973) was an American historian and biographer. For many years he taught at Yale University. He was also president of the American Historical Association and a specialist in American diplomatic history. He was awarded two Pulitzer Prizes. Jerald A. Combs says he was "the greatest of all historians of early American diplomacy." Biography Bemis was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, on what he remembered as "the wrong side of the hedge". He received his B.A. degree in 1912 from Clark University. Influenced by George Hubbard Blakeslee of the Clark faculty, Bemis also acquired an A.M. from Clark the following year. Dr. Samuel A. Bemis (1793–1881) was one of the earliest photographers in the United States. A small number of his daguerreotypes have survived. Biography Bemis was a Boston dentist when in April 1840 he acquired an early camera and became one of the first Americans to take a photograph. His extant daguerreotypes include views of Boston and of the White Mountains (New Hampshire), White Mountains of New Hampshire. These images are the earliest known American photographs of natural landscapes. Bemis's interest in photography began in March 1840 when he attended a series of lectures and demonstration of the daguerreotype process given by François Fauvel-Gouraud, a pupil of Louis Daguerre, Louis-Jacques Mandé Daguerre and an agent for Alphonse Giroux & Cie., sole manufacturers of equipment endorsed by Daguerre. Maxim Adam Bemis (; born April 6, 1984) is an American musician, best known as the lead singer and primary songwriter of the rock band Say Anything (band), Say Anything. He sang alongside Chris Conley (musician), Chris Conley in the Supergroup (music), supergroup Two Tongues (which featured band members from Say Anything and Saves the Day).
