Belyando is a rural locality in the Isaac Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Belyando had a population of 307 people. Geography The Belyando River passes through the locality from south to north, being fed by a number of tributary creeks. The Belyando River feeds into the Suttor River and then into the Burdekin River which flows into the Coral Sea. The Gregory Developmental Road passes through the locality from the north-east to the south-east; the Bowen Developmental Road enters the locality from the north-east and has its junction with the Gregory Developmental Road in the north-east of the locality. This junction is known as the Belyando Crossing. The Nairana National Park is in the north-east of the locality and the Wilandspey Conservation Park in the north of the locality. School of the Air is a generic term for correspondence schools catering for the primary and early secondary education of children in remote and outback Australia where some or all classes were historically conducted by radio, although this is now replaced by telephone and internet technology. In these areas, the school-age population is too small for a conventional school to be viable. History Circa 1929, Alfred Traeger invented the pedal radio which allowed people in remote areas to communicate over long distances, reducing their social isolation. James Earl (grazier)
James Earl (1835–1907) was a merchant in Far North Queensland of cartage and started cattle breeding. He is well known for his contributions to the local area. Butcher's Hill was historically referred to in order to describe locations, for example references to north, south etc. of Butchers Hill. This was because of the cattle station owned and run by Earl who became a butcher and the cattle station was known as Butcher's Hill. Butchers Hill could also refer to the Station. In modern times Lakeland is more commonly used and referred to as a landmark in the local area. Yacamunda Station
Yacamunda Station is a historic cattle station in North Queensland near Bowen. In 1935 it was one of the largest cattle stations in the state and played a significant part in the growth and development of early Australia. It was later sold in 2007 as a functioning cattle station. Historical references and photos are available for reference. ''Yacamunda Station'' was also the name for a telegraph station on the Clermont—Charters Towers line as an important historical location featuring a public telephone. Sir Thomas Livingstone Mitchell (15 June 1792 – 5 October 1855), often called Major Mitchell, was a Scottish Surveyor (surveying), surveyor and European land exploration of Australia, explorer of Southeastern Australia. He was born in Scotland and served in the British Army during the Peninsular War. In 1827 he took up an appointment as Assistant Surveyor General of New South Wales. The following year he became Surveyor General of New South Wales, Surveyor General and remained in this position until his death. Bowen Developmental Road
Bowen Developmental Road is a state-controlled district road (numbers 88A and 88B) rated as a local road of regional significance (LRRS). It is a rural strategic main road in Queensland, Australia. It is part of State Route 77, and functions as a highway. It has a length of and extends in northeast-southwest direction from Bowen on the east coast of Australia to the Gregory Developmental Road in Belyando near Nairana National Park. Gregory Developmental Road
The Gregory Highway is a state highway in Queensland, Australia that serves the major coal-mining centres of Central Queensland. The highway was named after Augustus Gregory, an early explorer. Route description The highway runs southward from Quartz Blow Creek, a point west of Mount Surprise on the Gulf Developmental Road, via Charters Towers, to Springsure, over away. The northern section of is designated by the state government as the Gregory Developmental Road. The shorter southern section between Clermont and Springsure () is designated the Gregory Highway. Burdekin River
The Burdekin River is a river in North and Far North Queensland, Australia. The river rises on the northern slopes of Boulder Mountain at Valley of Lagoons, part of the western slope of the Seaview Range, and flows into the Coral Sea at Upstart Bay over to the southeast of the source, with a catchment area of approximately .
