Below The Belt (Boxer Album)
''Below the Belt'' was the first album by Boxer, released on the Virgin label in January 1976. The album attracted less attention for its music than for its artwork. Photographed by Alex Henderson with graphics by Richard Evans, the cover featured model Stephanie Marrian spreadeagled and nude but for a pair of shoes, with a man's arm reaching up between her legs and his boxing-gloved hand hiding her genitalia. The back cover at first showed Stephanie in complete full-frontal nudity, but later pressings covered her up with the band's belt-styled logo. The cover was completely re-designed for the US market using the band photo from the inside of the UK gatefold cover. Boxer (band)
Boxer were a rock band formed by singer and keyboardist Mike Patto and guitarist Ollie Halsall in 1975. They signed to Virgin and three albums followed, '' Below the Belt'' (1975), '' Absolutely'' (1977) and '' Bloodletting'' (1979), which also featured Bobby Tench and Boz Burrell. The band dissolved after ''Absolutely'' when Patto became ill. The band was managed by Nigel Thomas who secured a five-album deal over five years with CBS, reputed to have been worth £1.2million, and was never fully executed due to Patto's death on 4 March 1979. During a six-year period, Boxer also toured the US and Europe. Chris Stainton
Christopher Robert Stainton (born 22 March 1944) is an English session musician, keyboard player, bassist and songwriter, who first gained recognition with Joe Cocker in the late 1960s. In addition to his collaboration with Cocker, Stainton is best known for his work with Eric Clapton, The Who, Andy Fairweather Low and Bryan Ferry. Career Stainton was born in Woodseats, Sheffield. After passing his eleven-plus examination, Stainton attended Rowlinson Technical School, Norton, Sheffield. Stainton's musical career began in 1960, when he played bass guitar with a local Sheffield band, 'Johnny Tempest and the Mariners'. The Mariners became 'The Cadillacs', before Stainton joined Joe Cocker in The Grease Band during 1966. Stainton co-wrote "Marjorine", Cocker's first UK Singles Chart hit in 1968. Tony Newman (drummer)
Richard Anthony Newman (born 17 March 1943) is an English rock drummer. He was at various times a member of the bands Sounds Incorporated, May Blitz, Three Man Army, T. Rex, and Boxer. He has performed with Little Richard, Jeff Beck, David Bowie, George Harrison, Robert Palmer, Eric Clapton, Donovan, Mick Ronson, Gene Vincent, Crystal Gayle, The Everly Brothers and others. In 1965, Newman played with Sounds Incorporated as one of the acts opening for the Beatles at Shea Stadium in New York City. Keith Ellis (musician)
Keith Ian Ellis (19 March 1946 – 12 December 1978) was an English bass player. He was born in Matlock, Derbyshire. He is known for his associations with The Koobas, The Misunderstood and Juicy Lucy. He was also a member of Van der Graaf Generator from 1968 to 1969. Ellis worked with Mike Patto and Ollie Halsall's band Boxer from 1975 until late 1976 when the original line-up split.Christopulos and Smart, ''Van der Graaf Generator'', p. 47. Ellis died in Darmstadt, Germany in 1978, whilst on tour with Iron Butterfly. No cause of death was determined, although the music journalist Ralph Heibutzki reported in a 2011 edition of '' Ugly Things'' that he was the victim of an accidental drug overdose. Ollie Halsall
Peter John "Ollie" Halsall (14 March 1949 – 29 May 1992) was an English guitarist, songwriter, and singer, best known for his role in the Rutles, the bands Patto, Timebox (band), Timebox, and Boxer (band), Boxer, and for his contribution to the music of Kevin Ayers. He is also notable as one of the few players of the vibraphone in rock music. He was known by his childhood nickname "Olly" or "Ollie" which was simply a corruption of his surname. The Ollie Halsall Archive was established in 1998, with the aim of documenting and promoting his work. Career Halsall began his musical career in 1964 playing drums with various local bands such as Pete and the Pawnees, the Gunslingers, the Music Students and Rhythm and Blues Incorporated. Mike Patto
Mike Patto (born Michael Thomas McCarthy, 22 September 1942 – 4 March 1979) was an English musician, who was primarily notable as lead singer for Spooky Tooth, Patto and Boxer. Background Patto was born in Cirencester, England, and first became vocalist and frontman for The Bo Street Runners, who won a TV band competition ''Ready Steady Win'' during 1964. He was a member of Timebox, his own band Patto, and Dick and the Firemen. In 1974, Patto joined Spooky Tooth as vocalist and keyboard player. He was also a founding member of the rock band Boxer. Career He was the lead singer of the group Chicago Line aka The Chicago Line Blues Band. Other musicians included Tim Hinkley on keyboards, Ivan Zagni on guitar, Mike Fellana on trumpet, Louis Cennamo on bass and Viv Prince on drums. Stephanie Marrian (born Stefanie Khan; 9 October 1948) is a former model, pop star and actress. She was the first Page 3 model in ''The Sun'' newspaper. Modelling career Marrian was the first Page 3 model in ''The Sun'' newspaper in the 17 November 1970 edition, where she was named as Stephanie Rahn. Marrian was using her father's surname of Khan at the time; a subeditor at the newspaper misread her surname as Rahn. From 1973 to 1978, using the name Stefanie Marrian, her mother's surname, she appeared regularly as the Page 3 girl. Richard Evans (born 30 March 1945, Wilmslow, Cheshire, England) is a graphic designer, art director and illustrator. He studied fashion and textile design at Nottingham School of Art and graphic design and illustration at Leicester College of Art. On leaving art school in 1968, he began what was to be a brief career as a fashion illustrator, mainly for teen magazines ''Petticoat'' and ''Honey'', published by Fleetway Publications. In 1971 he formed fashion footwear company Daisy Roots Shoes with a showroom in Beauchamp Place, Knightsbridge, London and a retail shop in Harrods Way In boutique, designing and producing high fashion footwear for the hip rock generation featuring stacked heel and platform shoes and boots in brightly coloured leathers and exotic reptile skins.
