Moses Belmonte
Moses Belmonte (1619 – 29 May 1647 in Amsterdam) was a poet and translator, the eighth child of Jacob Belmonte, also known as Jacob Israel Belmonte. He was a pupil of Saul Levi Morteira, whose sermons (''Gib'at Sha'ul'', 1645) he edited together with Benjamin Diaz. His poem "Argumenta Contra os Noserim" has been reprinted by De Castro in his ''Keur van Grafsteenen''. Belmonte translated the ''Song of Songs'' into Spanish. It was published in Hebrew characters in several editions of the Bible printed at Venice; then in Amsterdam, 1644, under the title ''Paraphrasis Caldaica en los Cantares de Selomo con el Texto; Traduzida en Lengua Española''. He also translated the '' Pirqe Abot'' into Spanish (''Perakym'', Amsterdam, 1644). Belmonte founded the Gemilut Chasadim society in 1639. Belmonte Mezzagno
Belmonte Mezzagno ( Sicilian: ''Bellumunti'' but more properly ''U Mizzagnu'' in the local version of the Sicilian language) is a '' comune'' (municipality) in the Metropolitan City of Palermo in the Italian region Sicily, located about south of Palermo. Belmonte Mezzagno was founded in 1752, when Prince Giuseppe Emanuele Ventimiglia asked and obtained the "Licentia Populandi" from King Charles III. The first urban settlement of the country was the "Bagghiu", a large open-air court, where the houses overlooked and was accessed by a large common entrance dominated by an arch placed at the edge of the Spatola torrent, where inhabitants could easily draw water. The first census taken in 1752 by the priest, don Stefano Grasso, shows that there were 64 houses and 185 inhabitants. The Bourbon army destroyed much of the town by fire on May 8, 1849 as retribution for the towns support of the 1848 Sicilian revolution. Belmonte Calabro, known simply as Belmonte ( Calabrian: ) prior to the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy, is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Cosenza, in Calabria (Southern Italy). The town is perched on a hilltop on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The Castle of Belmonte is a medieval castle located in the municipality of Belmonte, Castelo Branco district in Portugal. History Early history The early occupation of the site has been linked to the presence of the Romans when they entered the Iberian Peninsula. Medieval era The first historical information about the area dates back to the reign of the first King of Portugal Afonso I (1112-1185), when the landlord of region donated the lands to the Bishop of Coimbra on 6 May 1168. Later, King Sancho I (1185-1211), granted a Foral charter to the village in 1199. After the establishment of the Alcañices Treaty in 1297 with the consequent expansion of the frontiers to the west, the Belmonte Castle lost strategic importance, while the town was developing extramural. In the midst of the 1383-1385 Portuguese succession crisis, the castle sided with Beatrice and later was conquered by King John 1 (1385-1433).
