Belcourt Castle
Belcourt is a former summer cottage designed by architect Richard Morris Hunt for Oliver Hazard Perry Belmont and located on Bellevue Avenue in Newport, Rhode Island. Construction was begun in 1891 and completed in 1894, and it was intended to be used for only six to eight weeks of the year. Belcourt was designed in a multitude of European styles and periods; it features a heavy emphasis on French Renaissance and Gothic decor, with further borrowings from German, English, and Italian design. In the Gilded Age, the castle was noted for its extensive stables and carriage areas, which were incorporated into the main structure. Construction Belcourt is located on Bellevue Avenue at Lakeview Avenue, in Newport. A 50,000-square-foot (4,600 m2), 60-room summer villa, it was designed by Richard Morris Hunt for 33-year-old Oliver Belmont, who during the construction was divorced from Sara Swan Whiting and the father of a daughter, Natica, whom he denied paternity to. Belcourt is a census-designated place (CDP) in Rolette County, North Dakota, United States. It is within the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation. The population was 1,510 at the 2020 census. The community is the seat of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians. Belcourt was originally known as ''Siipiising,'' which is Anishinaabe (Chippewa) for "creek that sings with life-giving water." The name refers to what European Americans called "Ox Creek", which flows through the center of town. Belcourt was laid out in 1884. The community was named Belcourt in honour of Georges-Antoine Belcourt,. Belcourt is a municipality in northwestern Quebec, Canada, in the La Vallée-de-l'Or Regional County Municipality. History Following the construction of the National Transcontinental Railway, the area opened up for colonization. The new settlement was originally called Café or Coffee but renamed to Goulet, after the first permanent settler who arrived in 1915. In 1918, it was incorporated as the United Township Municipality of Carpentier-et-Courville. Since there already was a Goulet Post Office in Bellechasse County, the place was officially renamed to Belcourt in 1958, in honour of Napoléon-Antoine Belcourt (1860-1932).
