Bellanaleck (Flanagan, Deirdre & Laurence; ''Irish Place Names'', page 182. Gill & Macmillan, 2002. ) is a small village in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. It lies just south of Enniskillen on the main A509 ( N3) road towards Cavan and Dublin. In the 2011 census it had a population of 532. County Fermanagh
County Fermanagh ( ; ) is one of the thirty-two counties of Ireland, one of the nine counties of Ulster and one of six counties of Northern Ireland. The county covers an area of and had a population of 63,585 as of 2021. Enniskillen is the county town and largest in both size and population. Fermanagh is one of four counties of Northern Ireland to have a majority of its population from a Catholic background, according to the 2011 census. Mickey MacConnell
Mickey MacConnell (born 1947) is an Irish musician and songwriter. Life and work MacConnell was born in Bellanaleck near Enniskillen in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. He is the youngest member of a musical family. He worked in Dublin for Irish Press Group and, later, with ''The Irish Times''. MacConnell began writing songs very early in his life. In 1965, he wrote ''Only Our Rivers Run Free'' - a song that describes the natural world being damaged by the Irish border and that has been described by Stuart Bailie as "political but not hectoring". This encouraged him to seriously devote himself to writing music when he moved to Listowel, County Kerry, where he lives with his wife, Maura. MacConnell has released only two albums. His first album, ''Peter Pan and Me'', was released in 1992. His second album, ''Joined Up Writing'', was released in 2000. Brian D'Arcy CP OBE (born 1 June 1945) is an Irish Passionist priest, writer, newspaper columnist, broadcaster, and preacher. D'Arcy hosts a weekly radio programme each Sunday afternoon on BBC Radio Ulster. He is the author of several books, including ''A Little Bit of Religion'' and ''A Little Bit of Healing''. Early life and education D'Arcy grew up in the village of Bellanaleck in County Fermanagh. A509 Road (Northern Ireland)
The A509 is a road in Northern Ireland. It travels through County Fermanagh and continues to Cavan and Dublin in the Republic of Ireland as the N3 road (Ireland), N3. The road is a single-carriageway primary route, and forms part of a road corridor from Dublin to Ballyshannon via the N3 route in the Republic of Ireland and the A4 road (Northern Ireland), A4 and A46 road (Northern Ireland), A46 routes in Northern Ireland. Route The A509 commences at a roundabout with the A4 road (Northern Ireland), A4 on the outskirts of Enniskillen and follows a south-easterly path parallel to Upper Lough Erne. Cathal McConnell
Cathal McConnell (born 1944) is an Irish musician and singer best known as the mainstay of traditional band The Boys of the Lough, of which he is a founder member. His main instruments are the Irish flute and the tin whistle. Following a lifetime immersed in traditional music and song, Cathal McConnell is currently gathering his enormous collection of music and memorabilia for deposit with thIrish Traditional Music Archivein Dublin. The Passionists, officially named the Congregation of the Passion of Jesus Christ (), abbreviated CP, are a Catholic clerical religious congregation of pontifical right for men, founded by Paul of the Cross in 1720, with a special emphasis on and devotion to the Passion of Jesus Christ. A known symbol of the congregation is the labeled emblem of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, surmounted by a cross. This symbol is often sewn into the attire of its congregants. The Boys Of The Lough
The Boys of the Lough is a Scottish-Irish Celtic music band active since the 1970s. Early years Their first album, called ''Boys of the Lough'' (1972) consisted of Aly Bain (fiddle), Cathal McConnell (flute), Dick Gaughan (vocals and guitar) and Robin Morton ( bodhran and vocals). Since the 1960s, the Forrest Hill Bar in Edinburgh had been a centre for folk singers and instrumentalists. In the pub, always nicknamed "Sandy Bell's" and now formally called that, fiddler Aly Bain played along with singer/guitarists Mike Whellans and Dick Gaughan in sessions. Aly Bain was from the Shetland Islands, and steeped in the Shetland style of playing. Meanwhile, in Ireland, Cathal McConnell was an All-Ireland champion in both flute and whistle. Kinawley
Kinawley or Kinawly () is a small village, townland (of 187 acres) and civil parish straddling County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland and County Cavan, Republic of Ireland. The village and townland are both in the civil parish of Kinawley (founded by Natalis of Ulster) in the historic barony of Clanawley, while other areas of the parish are in the baronies of Knockninny in County Fermanagh and Tullyhaw in County Cavan. Belturbet
Belturbet (; ) is a town in County Cavan, Ireland. It lies on the N3 road, around north of Cavan town and from Dublin. It is also located around south of the border with County Fermanagh, part of Northern Ireland, and is from Enniskillen. As of the 2022 census, the population was 1,610. History Belturbet's location is historically one of the best places for crossing the River Erne. It was the capital of the Kingdom of East Breifne which was an historic kingdom of Ireland roughly corresponding to County Cavan that existed from 1256 to 1607. When the Anglo-Normans tried to conquer the Kingdom in the early 13th century, Walter de Lacy built a motte-and-bailey on Turbet Island (an island in the Erne). The fort was probably made of wood and has not survived although the steep mound of earth where it was built can still be seen.
